London Film Critics’ Circle To Fete Guillermo Del Toro

The London Film Critics’ Circle will hand Guillermo Del Toro the Dilys Powell Award for Excellence in Film, the organization’s top honor, at this year’s London Critics’ Circle Film Awards.

“Thank you to the London Film Critics’ Circle. It’s an honour to receive the Dilys Powell Award from a group I greatly admire and to join such an esteemed group of recipients,” Del Toro said in a statement. “Working in this industry continues to be the joy of a lifetime.”

Last year, the London critics presented the Dilys Powell Award to Daniel Craig. Recent recipients have included Jeffrey Wright, Michelle Yeoh, Sandy Powell, Sally Potter, Pedro Almodovar, and Kate Winslet.

Del Toro is currently on the awards circuit with his Frankenstein adaptation. In May, he will receive a BFI Fellowship.

“We’re delighted to honour such a visionary director for his exemplary world-building and invention, which has provided escape, wonderment and comfort to our membership during his career,” Jane Crowther, Chair of the London Film Critics’ Circle, said in a statement.

The London Film Critics’ Circle Awards will take place at The May Fair Hotel on February 1.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another leads nominations from the Critics’ Circle with nine nods. PTA’s epic is closely followed by Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, which landed eight. Both films landed nods for Film of the Year and Director of the Year. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners was nominated in seven categories.
