London ‘Golden Boy’ With Josh O’Connor Sets Full Cast, Releases Trailer

The previously announced London revival of Clifford Odets’ classic Golden Boy starring Josh O’Connor has rounded out its cast and released a trailer for the production arriving this September.

Joining the Disclosure Day actor (who will play Golden Boy‘s lead character Joe Bonaparte) are Jason Barnett (Bridgerton), Richard Fleeshman (Company), David Ganly (The Crown), Patrick Martins (Emma), Daniel Mays (Line of Duty), Oliver Ryan (Dune), Hayley Squires (All My Sons), Stanley Townsend (Andor), Zubin Varla (Tammy Faye) and Nicholas Woodeson (Skyfall).

The revival at London’s Almeida Theatre will be directed by Olivier Award winner Sam Yates (whose recent Vanya starring Andrew Scott received both London and Off Broadway stagings) begins previews Wednesday, September 9, opens Tuesday, September 15 and runs until Saturday, October 31.

The synopsis: “1930s New York, at the height of the Depression. Joe Bonaparte is a gifted young violinist with extraordinary talent and a future in music, until a chance at fame and fortune lures him into the brutal world of professional boxing. Pressured by a ruthless manager, tempted by a forbidden love, and bound by the expectations of his Italian-American family, Joe is a young man torn between the seductive promise of the American Dream and the quiet honor of a decent life. He must confront what he’s willing to sacrifice, who he’s willing to become, and how to find his place in a world that demands he choose a side.”

No word yet on whether the revival has a Broadway transfer in its future. The last time Golden Boy was staged on Broadway was in 2012 in a Lincoln Center Theater production directed by Bartlett Sher and starring Seth Numrich as Joe Bonaparte, as well as Yvonne Strahovski, Tony Shalhoub and Danny Burstein.

Odets definitely will be represented on Broadway this season though: The playwright’s Awake and Sing! is set for a Manhattan Theatre Club revival in January 2027, with a cast including Burstein, Jessica Hecht and Jeremy Shamos.
