Man bludgeons female co-worker to death with sledgehammer—police
A Minnesota man has been accused of bludgeoning a female co-worker to death using a sledgehammer.
David Bruce Delong, 40, was charged with second degree intentional murder on November 11.
Wright County Sheriff’s Office said in charging documents that Delong had confessed to the killing and said he did not like the victim, later named by her family as Amber Czech, and had been planning to kill her for some time.
Why It Matters
The murder raises questions about workplace safety. The victim’s family told CBS-affiliated WCCO that they want to raise awareness about workplace violence.
What To Know
Delong and Czech worked together at Advanced Process Technologies in Cokato, Minnesota.
Police responded at 6 a.m. on November 11 to a 911 call reporting an injured woman at the scene.
The woman, who was not named by police, had suffered “major head trauma with significant blood loss.” A bloody sledgehammer was seen on the floor near her.
Police said Delong confessed to killing her in statements to them, as well as telling a witness something to the effect of: “I hit her with your hammer, she is by your toolbox, she is gone.”
The victim’s family identified her to WCCO as Amber Czech, 20, who they say was an “amazing welder” who loved her job.
Video surveillance seen by police showed Delong, who was wearing gloves, walking to the victim’s workstation from his own.
He then picked up a sledgehammer and swung it in the direction of the woman, who is off camera.
Delong is seen first swinging the sledgehammer in a horizontal movement, which police say is consistent with the victim standing. He then delivered several blows in a downward motion, consistent with the victim lying on the ground.
Despite the victim receiving medical care at the scene, she died from her injuries.
The charge of second degree murder with intent carries a potential maximum sentence of 40 years. Prosecutors said they will consider charging Delong with first degree premeditated murder upon further evaluation of the case.
What People Are Saying
Wright County Attorney Brian Lutes said in a statement: “I will evaluate this case for a possible charge of 1st degree premeditated murder which requires convening a grand jury.”
Advanced Process Technologies said in a statement on Facebook: “As some in our community know, one of our facilities was the site of a tragic event that resulted in the death of one of our coworkers. Our hearts are with their family, friends and all who are grieving this loss. We are working closely with law enforcement as they investigate this event and focused on supporting our employees and the victim’s family.”
What Happens Next
Delong is due to appear in court on November 24, according to Law and Crime.
