Map shows air quality alert as Trump calls for Canada to pay

Air quality alerts are in force across several states on Monday as smoke from hundreds of Canadian wildfires has blanketed swathes of the northern United States.

There are more than 940 wildfires burning across Canada, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center.

As of Monday morning, air quality alerts span all or parts of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Trump said Sunday that he had told Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney that the country must do more to control the wildfires, and previously suggested Ottawa could face tariffs or other costs tied to the cross-border air pollution, according to Reuters.

“I have a ​good relationship with Mark Carney, but we’ve got to stop ​the fires up there,” Trump said. “Maybe they should pay us some damages ​or something, or we should do some tariffs.”

Newsweek contacted Carney’s office for comment via email outside of normal working hours.
