Marvel Drops Ghost Rider, Black Panther 3 News
Marvel Studios used its return to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday to unveil a roadmap for the next phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), placing Avengers: Doomsday at the heart of its theatrical strategy while confirming several long-awaited projects set to arrive through 2028.
Studio President Kevin Feige told thousands of fans that Marvel’s immediate focus remains on big-screen storytelling, with Avengers: Doomsday serving as the cornerstone of the franchise’s next chapter. Scheduled for release on Dec. 18, 2026, the crossover film will unite the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men in what Marvel described as one of its most ambitious ensemble productions to date.
To build momentum ahead of the release, Marvel also announced that Avengers: Endgame will return to cinemas on Sept. 25 in an expanded theatrical re-release featuring previously unseen footage designed to bridge the gap between the Infinity Saga and Avengers: Doomsday.
Marvel Doubles Down on Theatrical Releases
The presentation underscored Marvel’s renewed emphasis on theatrical releases following a quieter Comic-Con appearance in 2024 and a period of recalibration for the studio.
Rather than unveiling an extensive slate of Disney+ series, Marvel focused almost exclusively on upcoming films, signalling that its next phase will revolve around fewer, interconnected blockbuster releases designed to bring audiences back to cinemas.
Feige framed the strategy as a continuation of the studio’s interconnected storytelling model, with multiple franchises gradually converging toward larger crossover events.
Ghost Rider Finally Joins the MCU
Among the panel’s biggest surprises was confirmation that Ryan Gosling will headline a standalone Ghost Rider film scheduled for 2028.
Directed by Deadpool & Wolverine filmmaker Shawn Levy, the project marks Ghost Rider’s first official appearance within the Marvel Cinematic Universe after years of speculation. Marvel did not reveal which incarnation of the supernatural antihero Gosling will portray or provide additional story details.
The announcement drew one of the loudest reactions from Hall H, reflecting fans’ long-standing anticipation for the character’s MCU debut.
Black Panther Franchise Moves Forward
Marvel also officially confirmed Black Panther 3, with Ryan Coogler returning to direct the third instalment of the franchise.
The studio announced that David Jonsson will portray the adult Toussaint, the son of T’Challa first introduced during the closing moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Letitia Wright and Winston Duke are also set to return.
The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on Dec. 15, 2028, continuing Wakanda’s story as Marvel expands its next generation of heroes.
Several Major Projects Remain Under Wraps
While Marvel outlined much of its near-term theatrical slate, several anticipated projects were notably absent from the presentation.
The studio offered no new updates on Avengers: Secret Wars or its long-awaited X-Men reboot, both of which are widely expected to feature more prominently during Disney’s D23 Expo next month.
Marvel did, however, briefly showcase Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine video game and reiterated that Spider-Man: Brand New Day remains a key part of its upcoming release schedule.
Roadmap Over Shock Announcements
Rather than relying solely on surprise casting reveals, Marvel used Hall H to reassure fans about the direction of its cinematic universe after several years of uneven theatrical performance and shifting release schedules.
By centring Avengers: Doomsday as the focal point of its next phase while confirming new chapters for Ghost Rider and Black Panther, the studio presented a clearer picture of where the MCU is headed, with larger franchise announcements still expected later this year.
