Metta World Peace wants his own WNBA trophy as a coach: ‘Have the chops’
Like most basketball fans, NBA pros are currently being seduced by the intensity that is the WNBA Playoffs right now and are singing the praises of all the action. This includes former players like Metta Sandiford-Artest (yes, THAT Artest, Metta World Peace), who took to X to hype up the league, along with talking about his own coaching style.
“As I watch the @WNBA, I get excited about the opportunities to apply lock up defense and offensive scoring at a rate with the best,” the former Indiana Pacers forward said in a post. “Coaching women’s basketball for 11 years now is so satisfying, especially seeing all the interest now. And it’s only up from here. These playoffs are exciting.”
In the video, Sandiford-Artest goes on to talk about his coaching career and how he’s been coaching women’s basketball for a decade. And while he’s currently coaching college basketball and running a sports agency, he has his eyes on a much bigger prize.
“I definitely have the chops to win a championship as a WNBA coach.”
Sandiford-Artest is currently an associate head coach for the Cal State LA women’s basketball team, a position he received in July.
“When we got to where we were at in Cal State LA, I think the expectation was ‘go to school, get your degree, and do your standard typical stuff. When we got there, we said ‘yeah, we want you to do that but we also want you to become really good basketball players and we wanna win.’”
“And we were able to get Academic all Americans while winning our conference tournament and it translates, not only to women’s basketball, it also translates to men’s basketball.”
In the 20-minute video he recorded while on a walk with his son, the former Lakers star then spoke about if coaching women on the court is different from coaching men and goes on to say that he would also love, and will, win an NBA title as a head coach as a head coach as well. He also talks about specific players and their playing style and along with being enamored by the teams currently in the playoffs. He also touched based on his own experiences with teams in the NBA.
And fed a hungry crow who remembered him.
“I’m coming to compete.”
