Mocha Brunette Is the Hair Color Trend Claiming Summer 2026

Taking our hair darker during summer feels a little counterintuitive, but with searches for “mocha hair color” up by 82% last month, it’s clear we’re taking a break from convention and seeking out rich, deep tones that look phenomenal and timeless, whatever the season.

Of course, brunettes hair has enjoyed some serious experimentation over the past year, with various graduations of the tone making waves. There’s been expensive brunette–the glossy, multi-dimensional shade that looks extra healthy and luxe. There’s been teddy bear brunette, which offers up a perfect neutral between brunette and blonde. And there’s been glossy black hair–the ultra deep brunette favored by the likes of Kendall Jenner, Simone Ashley, Laura Harrier and Charli XCX.

But as far as current color switch-ups go, it’s mocha brunette all the way, with Hailey Bieber, Kaia Gerber and Amal Clooney all embracing the shade over the past few weeks. Fresh, glossy and rich, it has everything we need to help us feel renewed through summer and into core “brunette” territory: Autumn.

What is mocha brunette?

Colors can be tricky as people can read and reference them differently, but for the avoidance of doubt, mocha brunette is a rich, deep brunette with warm, chocolate tones which bonus reflect light beautifully for mega glossy-looking strands. It should feel tonal and blended, so whilst other shades like subtle caramels (especially around the face and the places the sun would natural hit) can frame and add dimension, they should merge seamlessly, rather than feeling like a stand-out highlight.

“We’re seeing super high-shine brunettes taking the stage with dark mocha brunette,” confirms Shvonne Perkins, Lead Educator at Madison Reed. “In terms of maintenance, deep brunettes require upkeep and need glossing and toning often,” she adds (so check out our guide to the best glossy hair treatments and color-reviving toners).
