Modern Warfare 4 Beta Faces Login Issues as Infinity Ward Fixes Audio

Modern Warfare 4‘s Early Access Beta is already exposing the usual launch-day problems but Infinity Ward is moving quickly on the complaints.

Some players have been unable to get past the “Checking for update” screen or have encountered the “Networking Failed to Start: HUENEME – NEGEV” error.

Others who made it into the beta are criticizing footstep audio, matchmaking, spawns and the game’s dense attachment system. The beta launched August 21, with Weekend Two opening to all players on August 28.

Login problems are blocking some players

The HUENEME – NEGEV error is not unique to Modern Warfare 4. It has appeared across previous Call of Duty games and generally indicates a connection or routing problem between the player’s network and Activision’s servers rather than a hardware failure.

A complete restart of the modem and router can resolve the problem for some players.

PC players also need TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled for online play, so those settings are worth checking before assuming the beta installation itself is broken.

Bigger argument is matchmaking

“We’re testing two matchmaking approaches during the Beta: Classic Matchmaking, which uses skill as a factor, and Open Matchmaking, which places less emphasis on skill,” Call of Duty Staff explained in the official beta matchmaking update.

Activision said early data favored Classic, prompting a strong reaction from parts of the Call of Duty community. The official Call of Duty account initially got into a heated exchange with critics before taking a more conciliatory position.

“We asked for feedback and you definitely gave it to us. And that’s what a beta is for,” the official Call of Duty account said on X in response to player criticism of the matchmaking test.

The dispute is familiar. Players have argued about skill-based matchmaking for years, with one side preferring competitive, closely matched lobbies and another favoring looser matchmaking that prioritizes connection quality.

Footstep audio is the loudest gameplay complaint

Once players got into matches, footstep audio quickly became one of the biggest complaints. The current Ninja perk makes players extremely difficult to hear, creating a strong incentive to equip it.

Other complaints include inconsistent audio, spawn behavior, the attachment system and concerns that the game feels too similar to previous Modern Warfare titles.

That feedback needs some context: social media and Reddit show that vocal complaints exist, but they don’t establish how the entire beta population feels. Plenty of players are also reporting that they like the movement and gunplay.

Infinity Ward is already making changes

Infinity Ward responded quickly. Its first beta update, announced August 22, targeted several of the most frequently reported problems:

  • Footstep and gear-audio adjustments
  • Map voting
  • Weapon balancing
  • General bug fixes
  • A new map, Cachette

The studio is also tracking optic visual glitches, animation inconsistencies, party-joining problems and PC hitching.

“We’ve made several updates based on your feedback, including Footstep Audio, Gear Audio, Map Voting, Weapon Balancing, and various bug fixes,” Infinity Ward said in its August 22 beta update. The first major adjustments arrived roughly a day after the beta began, with footstep audio receiving particular attention.

So, What’s next?

This is exactly what a beta is supposed to expose. Network problems, unexpected hardware behavior and gameplay issues that don’t appear during internal testing become much easier to identify when thousands of players start playing simultaneously.

The important question isn’t whether the first weekend was rough, it was. The question is whether Infinity Ward can turn that feedback into a better launch build before Modern Warfare 4 arrives on October 23.

“Weekend Two begins August 28 and will be open to all players,” Activision says in its official Modern Warfare 4 Beta information, with the second weekend expanding access beyond pre-order customers.

Here’s what we found

If you’re stuck on a networking error, don’t assume the entire beta is broken. HUENEME – NEGEV is a recurring Call of Duty connection issue, and basic network troubleshooting can help.

If you’re unhappy with matchmaking or footstep audio, those concerns are already being tested and addressed. The next few days will show whether Infinity Ward’s changes actually improve the experience or simply move the argument somewhere else.
