Monarch Media To Adapt Christian Coming-Of-Age Film ‘A Week Away’ For TV With Carlos PenaVega, Leigh-Allyn Baker & More Set To Star
EXCLUSIVE: Monarch Media is adapting its Christian coming-of-age romance film A Week Away into a TV series starring Antonio Cipriano, Cozi Zuehlsdorff, David Koechner, Leigh-Allyn Baker, Sacha Carlson, Ava Jean, Haven Greene, Jason Marsden and Carlos PenaVega.
The series is set to be distributed by Angel Studios. Alan Powell, founding member of Christian rock group Anthem Lights and co-writer of the original film, has been tapped as the showrunner. He will also pen the series with Kali Bailey and Zuehlsdorff.
Similar to the film, which launched on Netflix in 2021, A Week Away: The Series follows a group of kids as they embark on a summer at Camp Aweegaway — a Christian camp filled with adventure, friendships, and unexpected self-discovery.
Production will take place at the same location as the original film, Nashville’s Camp Widjiwagan.
“A Week Away has been a very personal endeavor for me from the beginning,” said Powell. “I grew up a Pastor’s kid who went to Christian Camp every summer and I have vivid memories of those moments even to this day. So personal, in fact, that the girl leads in the film are named after my two oldest daughters, Avery and Presley, and now two of the leads of the series are two of my other daughters, Lennie and Rowe. It’s been an honor to see the original film resonate with so many people, and we couldn’t be more excited to continue the story through the series with our partners at Angel Studios.”
As for the cast, Cipriano will play Max, the outsider skeptic who is out to take down the camp down a notch. Zuehlsdorff stars as Lennie, the innocent believer who intends to help save the camp. Koechner reprises his role as David, the animated camp director from the original film.
Baker stars as Karla, the camp’s benefactor who wants to change the camp’s focus and traditions. Carlson stars as Jake, the gung-ho camper who will win at all costs. PenaVega stars as Jeremy, a charismatic youth pastor who becomes a trusted mentor to the campers on their journey.
Powell, Vicky Patel and Steve Barnett will executive produce through Monarch Media, Bailey and Elizabeth Yuja will co-executive produce. Hope Karowski, Paul Becker, Zuehlsdorff will produce and Adam Watts, who will produce the series’ musical elements, will also co-produce.
Monarch Media is known for producing the acclaimed Richard Linklater film Hit Man, starring Glen Powell, and the action thriller Valiant One, starring Chase Stokes. Currently, the company is in production on Tangles, an animated feature starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Abbi Jacobson and Seth Rogen. They also recently attached writer Michael Notarile to dark cannabis con comedy, Bune. In February, Deadline announced that Monarch had secured the rights to adapt Nicholas Sparks’ A Walk To Remember.
