‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story’ Debuts At No. 2 On Netflix’s Weekly Top 10, Rivaling ‘The Lyle & Erik Menendez Story’ Performance
The latest installment of Ryan Murphy‘s Monster series on Netflix appears to be off to a slightly better start than its predecessor.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story, which premiered on October 3, drew 12.2M views in its first three days of availability, putting it at No. 2 on Netflix’s weekly English TV Top 10 from September 29 to October 5.
That number alone is basically on par with the opening week performance for Season 2, titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, which debuted to 12.3M views last year. However, the second season hit Netflix on a Thursday, giving it one additional day in its premiere week to amass similar viewership. With that in mind, it appears that The Ed Gein Story has gained slightly more traction, at least initially.
On average, The Erik and Lyle Menendez Story managed about 3M views per day in its premiere week, while The Ed Gein Story saw about 4.1M.
In fact, based on average daily views, The Ed Gein Story is more closely emulating Season 1’s performance. Dahmer put up about 4.4M views per day over its premiere week in 2022, totaling 21.9M. The first season became available on a Wednesday, giving it not one but two additional days to reel in viewers compared to Season 3.
Dahmer took off and eventually became one of Netflix’s most-watched seasons of television ever. The Menendez Story didn’t quite replicate that level of success, even despite developments in the brothers’ case unfolding around the time the season hit streaming.
The Ed Gein Story is likely to see an uptick in the next report, with a full week of viewing to account for, though time will tell whether it’ll hit the zeitgeist in the same way Season 1 did.
As for the rest of Netflix’s weekly Top 10, Wayward was No. 1 on the English TV list for the second consecutive week with 14.1M views.
Third place went to House of Guinness, the new series from Peaky Blinders’ Steven Knight, with 6.4M views, and Love Is Blind Season 9 took fourth place with 3.7M views.
Kpop Demon Hunters added another 18.1M views to its total last week as well, placing it back atop the weekly English film list and placing even more distance between it and the No. 2 spot on the most popular list, Red Notice.
