Netflix Making Documentary Series About Tragedy Of Vanishing Cyclist Tony Parsons, Who Went Missing Without Trace On A Charity Bike Ride

EXCLUSIVE: The story of a Scottish cancer survivor who was killed during a 100-mile charity bike ride is being told via a Netflix UK documentary series.

We understand that Netflix has these past few months been working on a show about Tony Parsons, with anticipated air date later this year.

Parsons, a former Royal Navy Officer who had survived cancer, was killed after being hit on the road by a drunk driver in 2017 during a solo charity bike ride in Scotland. Alexander McKellar, the man who killed Parsons, hid his body in a remote peat bog and left the scene with his twin brother Robert.

For years, Parsons’ tragic disappearance was a total mystery. The twins were eventually caught when Alexander McKellar confessed to his girlfriend and showed her the grave, before she subsequently informed police. The twins were sentenced in 2023 to 12 years and five years in prison respectively, and Parsons’ family received a six-figure compensation payout last year, according to reports from the time. “At last justice has been done,” a statement from Parsons’ family read.

In making a doc about Parsons, Netflix is following in the footsteps of the BBC, which premiered a two-part, well-reviewed show titled The Vanishing Cyclist for its Murder Case strand in August last year. That doc, which was produced by Firecrest Films, told of a “six-year pursuit of justice involving a missing persons search, a criminal investigation and a high-profile court case,” according to its synopsis.

Netflix declined comment.
