New Line Lands Hot Sci-Fi Thriller Spec ‘Cut Outs’ From Isaac Louis García; BoulderLight To Produce

EXCLUSIVE: New Line has preemptively acquired Cut Outs, an original sci-fi thriller spec by Isaac Louis García.

J.D. Lifshitz and Raphael Margules, the duo behind buzzy genre outfit BoulderLight Pictures, are set to produce via their first-look deal with the studio. Plot details are under wraps, but in line with the company’s past work — including the recent sci-fi thriller Companion and their horror thriller breakout Barbarian — you can expect that this will be another fun, fresh, twisty piece of material. Tracy Rosenblum is set to oversee the project for the company.

An alum of the AFI Conservatory, García has worked in multiple writers’ rooms, the most recent being for Duster, the crime thriller series reuniting Lost‘s J.J. Abrams and Josh Hollowya, which premieres on Max May 15. Previously, he’s also been a part of Angelyne at Peacock and Alan Ball’s HBO series Here and Now, placing in the Nicholl Fellowship with his feature scripts.

BoulderLight has had a productive year so far, most recently setting up hot comedy spec I Can See You’re Angry from Brandon Cohen at Miramax, as we were first to report. They unveiled their critically acclaimed AI thriller Companion, starring Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, in January and will next see the release of their offbeat dark comedy Friendship, starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, which A24 acquired out of TIFF. That film, written and directed by Andrew DeYoung, opens in limited release on May 9.

First teaming with hot genre maestro Zach Cregger on Barbarian, his hit horror thriller for 20th Century Studios, released in 2022, BoulderLight is also the producer of his latest feature, the anticipated horror film Weapons, which hits theaters via Warners on August 8. Other upcoming projects include Jaume Collet-Serra’s survival thriller Play Dead, starring Noah Jupe, as well as Molepeople, a horror flick they’ll produce alongside Rough House Pictures, which has Rob Savage attached to direct.

Coming off of the aforementioned Companion, and with Weapons on the docket, New Line’s slate for the year also includes Final Destination: Bloodlines on May 16, The Conjuring: Last Rites on September 5, and Mortal Kombat 2 on October 24.

García is represented by Heroes and Villains Entertainment, Independent Artist Group, and Andrew Howard at Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
