Nick Borenstein Sets ‘August’ Cast: Lauren Graham, Patti LuPone & Dan Bucatinsky

EXCLUSIVE: Lauren Graham (Twinless), Patti LuPone (Beau Is Afraid) and Dan Bucatinsky (The Comeback) are set to star opposite Nick Borenstein in August, a comedy marking Borenstein’s feature directorial, screenwriting, and acting debut.

Currently in production in New York City, the film follows a young, gay New Yorker (Borenstein) who, after the sudden death of his beloved therapist (Graham), spirals into an obsessive investigation as he becomes convinced her death was not accidental. Part mystery, part comedy, August blends humor with suspense in a New York caper about grief, obsession, therapy, and the increasingly blurry line between healing and spiraling.

Produced by Borenstein, Lindsay Blair Goeldner (I Like MoviesCampeón Gabacho) and Bucatinsky, August has been selected for the 2026 Inside Out Toronto International Finance Forum, presented by Netflix.

“I love therapy, and I wanted to explore how uniquely intimate that relationship can be,” said Borenstein on the impetus for the film. “August explores what happens when you lose someone you’re not entirely sure you’re allowed to grieve. It’s suspenseful, funny, human, and probably something I should unpack in my next session.”

Bucatinsky told us, “It’s a privilege to collaborate with such a smart, fresh and comedic voice like Nick’s. There’s no better time to be championing independent LGBTQ films than now.”

A Golden Globe-nominated actress known for roles in Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, Graham has recently been seen in Universal’s Colleen Hoover adaptation Reminders of Him, as well as James Sweeney’s Sundance prize-winning dark comedy Twinless. She is repped by CAA and LBI Entertainment.

LuPone is an Emmy nominee and three-time Tony Award-winning Broadway legend whose recent screen credits include Agatha All Along and Ari Aster’s Beau Is Afraid. She is repped by The Artists Partnership.

Emmy winner Bucatinsky exec produces and stars opposite Lisa Kudrow in the HBO comedy The Comeback, which just aired its third and final season. Also recently seen on HBO’s Hacks, he is repped by Innovative Artists, Principal Entertainment, and Myman Greenspan Fox.

Borenstein is a New York-based filmmaker whose work has screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Outfest, NewFest, and others. Outside of his work as a filmmaker, he serves as General Manager of The Webby Awards.
