Nicolas Cage Reacts To ‘Spider-Noir’ Cancellation (Exclusive)
EXCLUSIVE: Spider-Noir star Nicolas Cage is speaking out about Prime Video’s decision not to proceed with a second season of the superhero series.
“For me, one season is perfect, having said what I wanted to say with this dangerous, innovative, pop-art Spider-Man,” Cage said in a statement to Deadline, adding, “Onwards, upwards, inwards.”
Cage’s reaction to the cancellations echoes comments he had made in interviews tied to Spider-Noir’s May release, first on MGM+’s linear channel and then on Prime Video’s streaming platform. In them, he sounded unsure about the series’ renewal chances but happy with what he and the producers did in Season 1, telling Variety that “whether it happens or not, all of us achieved what we set out to do, and it works on its own.”
Indeed, Season 1 told largely a complete story with just a few loose threads left.
Spider-Noir, which marked Cage’s first TV role, has been praised by both reviewers and viewers, earning a 92% critics score and 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and landing 11 Emmy Award nominations — the most of any Prime Video series in 2026.
Its high price tag and respectable but not blockbuster viewership may have led to the cancellation but Spider-Noir, from co-showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot and fellow executive producers Phil Lord, Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal, has left a mark, including with its unique release in both color and black and white.
The series presented an acting challenge to Oscar winner Cage who spoke to Deadline of his inspirations.
“I wanted to go back to those old ’30s and ’40s movies and watch some Howard Hawks and pick up the speed of delivery from those actors,” he said in June. “I also thought of Double Indemnity with Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck and tried to embody that essence, mannerisms and vocalization to collide it with Stan Lee’s masterpiece of Spider-Man and see what spark I could generate. Kind of like a Roy Lichtenstein painting, I wanted to do something that would be both new for me and hopefully for the viewer.”
Cage remains in business with Prime Video. Next for him is the streamer’s movie Madden, in which he portrays legendary football coach and broadcaster John Madden. It premieres November 18.
