Nolan Wells Autopsy Update: Family Lawyer Raises New Questions About Teen’s Final Hours
The family of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells has ordered an independent autopsy after hiring civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who says new questions have emerged about the Mississippi teenager’s final hours before he was found dead near Horn Island following a Fourth of July boat trip.
Investigators say Wells is believed to have drowned after disappearing during the boat trip.
“Obviously, the biggest question is what happened to Nolan Wells,” Crump told ABC News. He added that many people following the case are struggling to reconcile what is currently known with the available photographs and videos from the July 4 outing. “I think the reason this case has caught such fire is that they see the pictures, they see the video, and they’re saying, ‘Hold on, you’re trying to tell us just accept this accident and sweep it under the rug?'” Crump said.
He added: “We have investigators talking to witnesses that have no alignment or no allegiance to the state, and that’s important.”
Authorities are trying to determine why Wells stayed on Horn Island after his friends left and what happened in the hours before he disappeared. They are also working to build a fuller timeline of his final movements, including whether anyone saw him after he was last with the group.
Other unanswered questions include whether cellphone records, GPS data, witness statements, or other digital evidence could help explain what happened. Until that review is complete, the exact circumstances of Wells’ final hours remain uncertain. Although investigators currently suspect drowning, several important questions remain unanswered.
Who Was Nolan Wells?
Nolan Xavier Wells was an 18-year-old student-athlete from Mississippi whose disappearance quickly captured the attention of people far beyond his hometown. Friends, relatives and neighbors described him as a kind, well-liked young man with a bright future ahead of him.
Once word of his disappearance spread, social media filled with missing-person posts and messages of support. Many in the community followed the search closely, hoping for good news as crews worked to find him.
What Happened During Nolan Wells’ Final Hours?
According to investigators, Wells disappeared during a boat outing with friends on July 4. The group had gone to Horn Island, a barrier island about 10 miles off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast. At some point during the trip, Wells stayed behind on the island while the others headed back to the mainland.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said investigators were told that Wells made the choice to remain there. “[The friends] left [Horn Island] and went back without Nolan,” Ledbetter told ABC News. “From what we understand, he chose to stay there.” When Wells did not make it home, his mother, Christine Wonsley, reported him missing and began publicly asking for help finding her son. That led to a large search effort involving several local, state and federal agencies.
How Was Nolan Wells Found?
The search included the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, and Gulf Islands National Seashore personnel, all of whom searched Horn Island and the surrounding waters.
What Do Authorities Believe Happened?
At this point, investigators believe Wells drowned, though they have made clear that the case has not been closed. Law enforcement says there is no evidence right now that points to a crime.
What Is the Family Saying?
Throughout the search, Nolan’s mother, Christine Wonsley, repeatedly asked the public for help finding her son. After authorities recovered a body believed to be Nolan, she shared her grief on social media. “Absolutely devastated,” Wonsley wrote.
What Has Law Enforcement Said?
Officials have emphasized that the investigation is still active, even after the recovery of the body. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to work with the county coroner and other agencies to complete the identification process and determine the official cause and manner of death. Authorities have not closed the case, and they say the findings so far are still preliminary while forensic work continues.
What Happens Next?
Authorities are continuing to review witness statements, digital evidence and forensic findings while awaiting the release of the official autopsy report. At the same time, the Wells family is awaiting results from the independent autopsy being conducted in Washington, D.C., which attorney Ben Crump said are expected Friday.
Investigators have not released an official cause or manner of death, and they continue to describe the case as an active investigation. Both the official and independent medical findings are expected to play a key role in determining what happened during Nolan Wells’ final hours.
