O’Ward ends Formula 1 dream to prioritise IndyCar future
Arrow McLaren driver Pato O’Ward has revealed he asked McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown to release him from his Formula 1 reserve driver responsibilities, saying his focus has shifted entirely toward building a long-term career in IndyCar.
The 27-year-old Mexican, who has served as McLaren’s reserve driver since 2022 and made five Formula 1 practice appearances during that period, said he “politely asked to be fired” from the role to regain control over his schedule after spending five consecutive years without a proper off-season.
O’Ward explained that while Formula 1 had been his childhood ambition, his priorities have changed as he has established himself as one of IndyCar‘s leading drivers.
“I politely asked Zak to fire me from all my Formula 1 services because I want to have an off-season. I haven’t had one in five years,” O’Ward said, according to Reuters.
O’Ward admitted he is no longer motivated by Formula 1’s current technical regulations, particularly the growing emphasis on hybrid power units. The current Formula 1 regulations and the planned 2026 engine formula featuring a near-even split between internal combustion and electrical power have reduced his enthusiasm for pursuing a full-time seat.
“Formula One was always my dream as a kid, but I’m in a great place in IndyCar. Just because the plate looks like gold doesn’t mean what you’re eating is healthier,” O’Ward said, according to Reuters.
The Mexican added that his current happiness and competitiveness in IndyCar outweighed any remaining desire to continue chasing opportunities in Formula 1.
McLaren has agreed to O’Ward’s request, with reigning Formula 2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli expected to assume reserve driver responsibilities moving forward. Since joining McLaren’s Formula 1 programme, O’Ward featured in five Free Practice 1 sessions and remained one of the team’s designated reserve drivers while continuing his full-time IndyCar commitments.
Although he was repeatedly linked with a possible Formula 1 opportunity, a race seat never materialized.
Stepping away from Formula 1 commitments allows O’Ward to dedicate his full attention to Arrow McLaren’s IndyCar programme. The decision comes as the team prepares for the 2027 season, when O’Ward is expected to race alongside experienced teammates Scott Dixon and Felix Rosenqvist.
O’Ward has consistently been among IndyCar’s title contenders in recent seasons and believes removing Formula 1 obligations will improve both his preparation and work-life balance.
