Pete Davidson has unveiled his dramatic transformation into one of New York’s most notorious mob figures for his upcoming crime drama Tommy Karate.

The former Saturday Night Live star shared a black-and-white first-look image on July 23, revealing himself as the real-life Bonanno crime family enforcer Tommy Pitera, who earned the nickname ‘Tommy Karate’ for his martial arts training. The image shows Davidson wearing a dark wig, slicked-back hair and facial prosthetics, marking a striking departure from his familiar appearance.

Who Was Tommy Pitera?

Pitera, a Brooklyn native, became one of the most feared figures associated with the Bonanno crime family. He was convicted in 1992 on multiple murder and drug-trafficking charges and is serving a life sentence. Prosecutors linked him to numerous killings, and he became known for his violent reputation within organized crime circles.

The film draws inspiration from Philip Carlo’s book The Butcher: Anatomy of a Mafia Psychopath, which chronicles Pitera’s criminal career and the investigation that ultimately led to his conviction.

What Is Tommy Karate About?

Rather than focusing solely on Pitera, Tommy Karate follows the efforts of DEA Agent Jim Hunt, played by Paul Walter Hauser, as law enforcement closes in on the notorious mob enforcer.

Justin Chon is directing the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Davidson and Joseph Gay. Davidson also serves as a producer, underscoring his involvement behind the scenes as well as in front of the camera.

The cast also includes Camila Mendes and Simon Rex, with filming currently underway in Atlanta.

Pete Davidson Takes Another Dramatic Turn

The first-look image highlights Davidson’s continued move into dramatic roles after establishing himself as a comedian. The actor has steadily expanded his film career with performances in The King of Staten Island, Bodies Bodies Bodies and The Dirt, and Tommy Karate represents one of his most physically transformative performances to date.

Director Justin Chon praised Davidson’s commitment to the role while sharing the first-look image, expressing excitement for audiences to see a different side of the actor.

Davidson has also spoken about the project’s significance, previously describing it as a passion project that had been in development for several years. He said he was excited to finally bring what he called an overlooked Mafia story to the screen after years of work.

When Will Tommy Karate Be Released?

Production on Tommy Karate is currently underway in Atlanta, but the filmmakers have not announced an official release date. With filming now in progress and the first promotional image released, more casting updates and production details are expected in the coming months.
