‘Pluribus’ Episode 7: social media reacts to shocking twist ending

After last week’s uplifting ending, it is shocking to think “Pluribus” Episode 7 would continue that high. Things, however, take a dramatic turn.

In Episode 6, we see Paraguay-based holdout Manousos (Carlos-Manuel Vesga) pack up his car before setting off to meet Carol (Rhea Seehorn) and, ideally, hatch a plan to save the world. At the start of episode seven, however, the lack of gas forces him on foot.

What comes next is sending strong reactions through social media.

It may be a long way to New Mexico, but Manousos bravely refuses any help from the hivemind. They offer him a ride on the back of a truck, and even pledge to airlift his car. In response, he takes out a fuel can and lights his car on fire, telling the hivemind they don’t belong here, and everything they have is stolen. It’s a defiant moment.

Manousos’ journey ends abruptly when he falls backwards onto the bacteria-laden spikes of a tree, prompting the hivemind to transport him to safety. That’s where we switch to Carol, and her final scene of the episode has viewers talking.

In it, the lone United States survivor uses a paint roller to sketch a huge message outside her house. We don’t see what it is until the last shot: ‘come back’. It’s an emotional gut punch hitting people hard.

Where Manousos has been able to avoid seeking help since the outbreak, Carol understandably caves in, driven to despair by overwhelming loneliness.

‘Pluribus’ Episode 7 Reactions

On X, @Kaaaiii_00 writes: “Ep. 7 of #Pluribus was incredible. Manousos is a real one lol; he’s really becoming a favorite, and that last scene— omg chef’s kiss

@derekwkim writes: “As I thought from the beginning, this show is centrally about Carol’s grief. But I think she has something else up her sleeve (DECEPTION). We’ll see. Really enjoyed the travelogue element with Manousos. Beautiful views & music. Feeling of freedom was palpable.”

@spottedreptile writes: “Ep 7 of Pluribus was an amazing mix, sheer horror when Manousos got stuck on the spikes, Carol almost suicidal with loneliness, and her acceptance of the message bcos at least it was a voice instead of silence. Then the gut wrench at the end. I was mesmerised. Plus all that gorgeous travel photography. Wow.”

Not everyone enjoyed the episode, however. @ChidiAkusobi writes: “I’m 15 minutes into a 48 minute long episode and NOTHING of consequence has happened. This is my number 1 issue with the show. It’s self-indulgent, forgets it’s a sci-fi show, and rapidly becoming a waste of time.”
