Rally falls short for No. 3 Texas in 7-6 loss to No. 4 Oklahoma
AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 3 Texas tried to climb out of an early hole but fell short against No. 3 Oklahoma 7-6 Friday in Southeastern Conference softball action at Love’s Field in Norman, Oklahoma.
The Sooners jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings, largely thanks to a grand slam by Ailana Agbayani, but the Longhorns chipped away and cut the lead to 7-5 by the end of the fifth inning.
Texas loaded the bases in the seventh and scored on a wild pitch to cut the Sooners’ lead to one run, but Oklahoma pitcher Sam Landry got Joley Mitchell to fly out to center field, ending the game.
Reese Atwood went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and two RBIs. Mia Scott also had two hits and two RBIs. Atwood plated a pair with a single in the fifth inning, while Scott blasted a solo home run in the fourth and drove in a run with a single in the fifth.
Agbayani drove in five runs for the Sooners with a 3-for-3 game at the plate. Nelly McEnroe-Marinas also had three hits, including two doubles.
Texas starting pitcher Teagan Kavan allowed six runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings. Oklahoma starter Sam Landry went the distance with five strikeouts and three walks.
Due to forecasted weather, the second game of the series has been moved from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday. It will be streamed on SEC Network+.
