Rams HC Sean McVay Throws More Shade at Recently Cut Kicker Harrison Mevis

A made field goal was the difference in the Buffalo Bills’ win over the Los Angeles Rams in Week 5, with the Bills’ Tyler Bass nailing a 47-yard game-winner in overtime.

On the opposing side, the loss left Rams head coach Sean McVay displeased. Soon after the crushing home loss, Los Angeles also made a big move, cutting their kicker, Harrison Mevis.

Mevis had two unsuccessful field-goal attempts during that overtime loss, starting with a 50-yard attempt that pulled wide left in the game’s first quarter. He later had an overtime field goal blocked by Bills defensive end Greg Rousseau. A kick between the uprights would have won the game for the Rams.

Days after the loss, head coach Sean McVay threw shade at Mevis over his blocked kick while talking to reporters about it.

“I didn’t think it would have gone in, I did not. I could be wrong, but it didn’t look like the trajectory was on alignment,” McVay said.

McVay’s remarks came after quarterback Matthew Stafford’s wife, Kelly, also seemingly threw shade at Mevis over his game-losing miss. It added to a difficult week for Mevis, who was cut and the subject of brutal online memes after his miss.

It was another tough loss for a Los Angeles team that entered the season as a strong favorite to win the Super Bowl. They’ve since fallen to 2-3, and their division rival, the San Francisco 49ers, has moved ahead of them at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Mevis was the Rams’ kicker for the past two seasons after a season kicking for the USFL’s former Birmingham Stallions. Through five games this season with the Rams, he connected on 5 of 9 field goals, which is only a 55.6% rate.

That blocked attempt was the first of his NFL career, and it came at a particularly costly moment in a big “MNF” game.

After being cut from the Rams, he’ll hope to find a new football team to join. Whether that’s the NFL or elsewhere remains to be seen.

Blake Grupe now takes over as the Rams’ kicker. He played his first three seasons for the New Orleans Saints, followed by one season for the Indianapolis Colts. So far, he has connected on 86 of 105 field goals during his NFL career and has only had one field-goal attempt blocked.

His career-long field goal is 60 yards, and the Rams are hoping he can provide the consistency they need to help win games.
