Red Sox predicted to add $6.5 million ace in blockbuster trade with NL club
The Boston Red Sox added Sonny Gray in a big trade earlier this offseason, but they haven’t made very many impactful moves besides that. They’ve swung a few trades, but nothing else has moved the needle.
The Red Sox need to add another star to their team, either in their rotation or in the starting lineup. The Red Sox could make a move for a free agent like Alex Bregman while hunting for a pitcher on the trade block.
Just Baseball’s Ethan Hyatt predicted on Monday that the Red Sox would land a trade for Washington Nationals ace MacKenzie Gore this winter.
“The stars seem to be aligning for the Red Sox to make another big move and pursue one of the top trade candidates in baseball in MacKenzie Gore of the Washington Nationals,” Hyatt wrote. “The Nats have made it clear recently that they intend to hear trade offers on both Gore and shortstop CJ Abrams, and the Red Sox haven’t exactly been afraid of trading prospects in recent seasons.
“Gore notched a 4.17 ERA over 30 starts and 159.2 innings in 2025, making his first career All-Star appearance, and was by far the most valuable pitcher on the Washington Nationals with a 2.9 fWAR this season.”
Gore would be the perfect target for the Red Sox. He’s one of the top young pitchers in the league, and he’s also on an affordable deal for the next few seasons.
The Red Sox could make a trade with the Nationals that sends a few top prospects, including one of their talented young pitchers, to Washington in exchange for the ace. This would give Boston a rotation with two of the top southpaws in baseball for the foreseeable future.
