Reddit Is Turning Posts Into AI Videos; Here’s How It Works

There’s a version of Reddit that already exists on TikTok you’ve probably scrolled past it. A robotic voice reads an unbelievable Reddit story while unrelated gameplay or cooking footage plays underneath.

Millions of people watch it. Reddit doesn’t see much of that attention directly. Now the company is testing a way to bring that format home. Reddit has launched a limited experiment that turns existing text posts and comment threads into short videos narrated by AI-generated voices.

On eligible posts, users can switch between Read and a new Play mode, with AI voices reading the original post and selected replies while the words highlight on screen in sync. Each video is clearly labeled “Real conversation voiced by AI.” The test began rolling out on the web on August 17, with iOS and Android following on August 18.

Reddit Is Chasing Content It Already Created

This isn’t Reddit blindly copying TikTok. The company is responding to a format that was already built around Reddit’s own content.

Third-party creators have spent years turning Reddit stories into narrated videos, usually pairing the text with gameplay, cooking clips or other background footage. Those videos have become a recognizable internet format, generating substantial views and advertising revenue on platforms such as TikTok and YouTube while Reddit remains largely outside that viewing experience.

“There’s a whole ecosystem of people who read Reddit posts out loud, and there’s a whole ecosystem of people who listen to that,” said Steve Huffman, co-founder and CEO of Reddit, during the company’s second-quarter 2026 earnings call.

The new Play mode is the obvious product response: instead of watching someone else perform a Reddit thread elsewhere, users can consume the original conversation as an AI-narrated video without leaving Reddit.

Text Thread Becomes a Three-Minute Video

One early example is an eight-year-old r/boardgames discussion asking for recommendations for games to play on a road trip. The thread has 101 replies. In Play mode, the conversation becomes a roughly three-minute portrait video, with AI voices reading the original question and selected answers while the corresponding text lights up as it is spoken.

The underlying Reddit post doesn’t disappear. Users can switch back to Read mode and access the original discussion and comments.

Reddit says its product experiments are “built alongside the community,” with users testing early versions and providing feedback before broader rollouts.

That makes this less of a platform-wide redesign than a test of whether people actually want to consume Reddit this way.

AI Isn’t Writing the Conversation, It Is Performing It

Reddit’s content has always depended heavily on tone. Sarcasm, jokes, arguments, exaggeration and deliberately ambiguous comments are part of what makes a thread feel human. Turning those words into spoken dialogue forces an AI voice to perform them.

A sentence that looks obviously sarcastic on screen can sound completely different when spoken without the right emphasis. A username, technical term or unusual word can also be mispronounced. And if the system selects or attributes the wrong comment, the error becomes part of a video rather than remaining buried inside a scrolling thread.

“Reddit is committed to protecting the authenticity of human conversation,” the company says in its AI-era policy statement, while emphasizing that AI should support rather than replace the human communities that make Reddit distinctive.

That distinction matters for reputation-sensitive conversations. A typo in a Reddit comment can disappear into a thread. A badly pronounced or misattributed statement in a short video can travel much further.

Reddit’s Bigger Shift Is Already Underway

The platform has traditionally been text-first, with users reading posts and navigating comment trees. But Reddit has increasingly pushed into richer media formats. Its video-in-comments feature, launched earlier this year, has already become a meaningful portion of video posts on the platform.

“Video in comments gives redditors a new way to bring their voice and expression into conversations,” said Maria Angelidou-Smith, Reddit’s Chief Product Officer, when the company launched video in comments.

AI narration takes that strategy another step. Instead of asking users to read a long discussion, Reddit can package the conversation into something closer to a podcast, short-form video or background listening experience.

That could also make Reddit easier to consume for people who aren’t accustomed to its traditional interface. A three-minute narrated thread is a much more familiar format to someone raised on TikTok and YouTube Shorts than a wall of comments.

Real Test Is Whether It Still Feels Like Reddit

For users, little changes right now. Play is optional, the original text remains available, and Reddit isn’t replacing every discussion with an AI video.

The bigger question is whether Reddit can turn a format that works because of its human messiness into something automated without stripping away the reason people enjoy it.

“Reddit’s raw materials are special, and there is so much potential to continue building great products and scaling profitably,” said Drew Vollero, Reddit’s CFO, in the company’s August 2026 statement. But Reddit has a problem those outside creators don’t: authenticity is part of its product.

If the AI voices simply make long threads easier to consume, Reddit could have found a useful new format. If they flatten sarcasm, misread context or make real conversations feel synthetic, the company may discover that the awkwardness of Reddit was never a bug to be automated away.
