Ryan Fox reacts to tying major history at Open Championship

Before the Open Championship from Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England teed off, only five golfers in history had ever shot a 62 in a major tournament.

Through the first three rounds of the Open Championship, though, Lucas Herbert, Sam Burns and Ryan Fox added their names to major history. Herbert and Burns carded their eight-under, 62s on Friday, just 22 minutes apart, before Fox vaulted himself to the top of the leaderboard with a 62 early on Saturday morning.

“I think it’s just the good weather conditions,” Fox said. “The course is brilliant. It’s obviously very firm and fast. In the mornings, the greens are a little bit softer. Obviously, we had pretty much no wind until the last couple of holes today.”

“[Shooting 62] probably crept into my head on 10, but I wouldn’t say it was there,” Fox admitted. “Then when I birdied 14, I was like, ‘I’ve got a chance here.’ Obviously, 17 you feel like it’s a birdie hole. If you can sneak one more there, I knew I had a chance to get to that 62 number.”

Despite three record rounds, Burns enters the final day of competition as the only golfer sitting at double-digits under par. After his round of 62, Fox is at eight-under and two shots off the lead while Herbert followed up his record round with a one-over, 71 to sit at seven-under and three shots off the lead.

Fox and Burns tee off in the final pairing at 9:20 a.m. ET.
