Scary Wimbledon scene as star doubles player Demi Schuurs crashes into ball girl
A Wimbledon player had an ugly crash during a women’s doubles quarterfinal Wednesday.
However, it wasn’t the usual slip on the grass that is so often seen throughout the Grand Slam tournament.
Rather, Demi Schuurs ran into a ball girl while chasing down a ball.
Schuurs, alongside partner Ellen Perez, was serving 3-3 in the first set while facing Shuko Aoyama and Liang En-shuo.
With a deep shot to the baseline from the opposing pair, Schuurs desperately ran to the back of the court to attempt to return the ball with a tough backhand swing.
In doing so, she ran into a ball girl, who was standing in her usual position at the very back of the court.
As Schuurs took her swing, the ball girl ducked and the ball bounced off the back wall and out of play.
The two fell to the ground and the point went to Aoyama and En-shuo.
Immediately following the collision, Schuurs needed medical attention and a physio went over to her bench to check her arm and knee during the mid-match medical timeout.
The ball girl didn’t appear to be hurt in the aftermath and Schurrs later gave her a high-five following the collision.
Schurrs went on to post a video of the incident to her Instagram story with two sad emojis.
Schuurs was able to continue to match and she and Perez won the next point and held their serve.
However, the two ultimately lost 6-4, 6-4 to end their Wimbledon run.
Schuurs, who is a multi-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist and ranks No. 23 among women’s doubles players, reached the semifinals in Australia in 2021.
Her career-high ranking was No. 7 in 2018.
