Scottie Scheffler addresses potential for breaking major Tiger Woods record

As he approaches the BMW Championship and FedEx Cup Playoffs, Scottie Scheffler was recently asked about the possibility of breaking a major Tiger Woods record.

That record is for the most money earned on the PGA Tour, which has obviously changed over the years, and much of that is due to Woods’ arrival and impact in golf.

“That has a lot to do with the purses and all that, and I’m not really too close to him, I think in terms of career wins,” Scheffler told reporters. “What am I, like, a fourth of the way there?

“Tiger did a lot for the game of golf and put us in a position where we’re able to earn some pretty good stuff financially, and that’s something we’re very grateful for. Tiger’s contributions to the game, I think when you look at where the purses were at before he came out on tour, to where they’re at now is a pretty stark difference,” he said.

Scheffler is coming off his second win of the season this past weekend, conquering the TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, for the St. Jude Championship. Scheffler’s only other win of the year came in January when he claimed the American Express and $1.656 million.

However, he has multiple second-place finishes this year, including at The Masters, which each brought him over $2 million in earnings.

By winning the St. Jude Championship last weekend, he added another $3.6 million to his career earnings and, more importantly, maintained a spot atop the FedEx Cup standings.

He’ll have two more events, including this week’s BMW Championship in Missouri, followed by the Tour Championship at the end of the month to finish out the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The BMW Championship gives $3.6 million as the top prize for its winner.

However, the FedEx Cup winner takes home a hefty $10 million, which would certainly be a nice bump to Scheffler’s earnings. Scheffler previously won the event two years ago, so he’s looking for his second trophy in three years.

The PGA website lists Tiger Woods’ career PGA Tour earnings at just under $121 million. Scheffler is currently at $119,964,411 in career PGA Tour earnings.

There’s no doubt Scottie Scheffler is among the all-time greats in the sport, as he continues to add to his career achievements and competes for the FedEx Cup win. However, he’s also regularly shown his humility and respect for legends such as Woods, realizing the golf legend has had a serious impact on the sport and made it more lucrative for him as a career.
