Sea of Thieves Free Weekend: Xbox, PC and PS5 End Dates Explained
Sea of Thieves is free to play this weekend, and you do not need an Xbox Game Pass subscription to join. There is one catch that makes the timing confusing: two free-play promotions are running with different end dates.
“September 17th-21st sees a Free Play Weekend taking place across all platforms, waiving the need for an online subscription such as Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation®Plus.” Rare also gives the precise window as September 17 at 15:00 UTC through September 21 at 17:00 UTC.
Xbox is running a separate Free Play Days promotion for Xbox and PC that ends September 20. Xbox’s own listing confirms that Sea of Thieves is free for all Xbox members during that period, with no Game Pass membership required.
Which Deadline Applies?
Sea of Thieves is free for all XBOX members to try from September 17 until September 20 on XBOX and PC (XBOX Game Pass Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential membership not required).
If you’re on PlayStation 5, Rare’s broader Season 21 promotion is the relevant window, running through September 21 at 17:00 UTC. Rare’s announcement says the free weekend covers all supported platforms and does not require Xbox Game Pass.
The overlapping promotions explain why different pages show different dates. They are not necessarily contradicting each other.

How To Start Playing
On Xbox, find Sea of Thieves in the Free Play Days collection under the Subscriptions tab in the Xbox Store. Xbox also provides an install option through its game listing. On other supported platforms, use the game’s normal store listing.
Rare describes the promotion as a “Free Play Weekend” during which the game is “free to install and enjoy across all supported platforms.” The same announcement says everyone can join the online experience without an Xbox Game Pass subscription.
What Happens After It Ends?
Once the applicable free-play window closes, normal access rules return. You’ll need to purchase the game or have access through an eligible Game Pass subscription to keep playing.
Your progress and achievements are retained if you purchase the game afterward. Xbox is also advertising a limited-time discount on Sea of Thieves: 2026 Edition, listing it at $13.99 instead of $39.99 in its US Free Play Days listing, although pricing and availability vary by region.
That makes the promotion more useful than a throwaway demo. You can play the current version, keep the progress you earn and decide afterward whether you want to pay for continued access.
Season 21: A Pirate Ship Without a Pass
The free period arrives alongside Season 21, so players are getting access to the game’s latest seasonal content.
“Season 21 doesn’t feature distinct headline Acts and so the updates in months two and three will focus on bug fixes, additional Events and refinements to the Custom Seas experience.” Rare also says the season brings a refreshed Season Pass and a schedule of special and recurring live events. Rare is running activities around Talk Like a Pirate Day, including the new Parley Pennant, which lets crews signal that they want to communicate with nearby ships.
The free access therefore has a fairly simple calculation. Xbox and PC players should aim to finish by September 20; PlayStation 5 players have until September 21 at 17:00 UTC under Rare’s wider promotion. Neither route requires Game Pass during the free-play period, and PlayStation players do not need PlayStation Plus for the event.
