Singapore: 2 People Rushed to Hospital After Choa Chu Kang Flat Fire as About 200 Residents Evacuated

Two people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in a Choa Chu Kang flat on Saturday night, August 29, while about 200 residents were evacuated from the building as a precaution.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it was informed about the blaze at Block 287 Choa Chu Kang Avenue 2 at around 9:05 pm. The fire involved items inside a bedroom of a second-floor unit.

Two people were evacuated from the affected apartment before SCDF officers arrived. Firefighters extinguished the blaze using a water jet.

Two people were subsequently taken to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation. According to a Facebook post by Chua Chu Kang GRC MP Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim around noon on August 30, both individuals have since been discharged.

It remains unclear whether the two people who were evacuated from the unit were the same individuals who were taken to hospital.

As a precautionary measure, SCDF and the police evacuated approximately 200 residents from the affected block.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

MP Thanks Emergency Responders and Volunteers

Zhulkarnain, who is also Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs, said he had contacted residents of the affected unit following the incident.

He also expressed his appreciation to the SCDF and police officers who responded to the fire, as well as HDB and People’s Association staff and Keat Hong grassroots volunteers who assisted during the incident.

The MP added that efforts have been ongoing to raise awareness about fire safety among households in the Keat Hong area.

Several HDB Fires Reported in August

The Choa Chu Kang blaze comes amid a series of HDB fires reported across Singapore in August, including several incidents involving injuries and fatalities.

On August 25, about 70 people were evacuated after a bedroom fire broke out at a housing unit in Balestier. No injuries were reported in that incident.

Earlier, on August 20, an elderly man was taken to hospital after a fire broke out inside an HDB flat at Buangkok Crescent.

A more serious incident occurred in Jurong East on August 16, when one person died and around 50 others were evacuated after a fire broke out in the living room of an HDB unit.

Another fatal fire occurred at Block 684 Race Course Road on August 3. Five people, aged between 55 and 88, were taken to hospital, and an 88-year-old man later died on August 5.

Residential Fires Remain Major Concern

The latest incident also comes against the backdrop of an overall increase in fires in Singapore. According to SCDF’s annual statistics released in February, the total number of fires rose from 1,990 in 2024 to 2,050 in 2025, an increase of 3 percent.

Residential buildings accounted for 1,051 of the reported fires in 2025.

SCDF identified unattended cooking and electrical fires, including those caused by electrical wiring faults or overloaded sockets, as the two leading causes of home fires.

Of the 304 electrical fires recorded at residential premises in 2025, 34 involved active mobility devices such as personal mobility devices, power-assisted bicycles and personal mobility aids.
