Singapore: 67-Year-Old Driver Dies After Car Crashes Into SBS Transit Bus in Ang Mo Kio


A 67-year-old man has died after the car he was driving crashed into the rear of an SBS Transit bus at a bus stop in Ang Mo Kio on Thursday, July 16. The collision also left a 61-year-old female passenger injured, while no one on the bus required medical attention.

The police said that they were informed about the accident involving a car and a bus along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, heading toward Upper Thomson Road, at around 8:35 am. Investigations into the crash are still ongoing.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said two people from the car were taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital following the collision.

The 67-year-old driver was transported to the hospital unconscious and later died from his injuries. A 61-year-old woman who was traveling in the same vehicle was taken to the hospital while conscious. Authorities have not released further details about her condition.

Crash Scene Showed Extensive Damage

Several videos were shared on TikTok that captured the aftermath of the collision. The photos showed a red car with its front end severely crushed after slamming into the rear of an SBS Transit bus that had stopped at a bus stop.

The footage also showed SCDF officers performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a person at the scene. Emergency responders deployed two ambulances, two SCDF pump ladders, and a Traffic Police vehicle to the location.

SBS Transit Extends Condolences

SBS Transit confirmed that one of its buses was involved in the incident. SBS Transit spokesperson Grace Wu told AsiaOne that “a Service 165 bus was rear-ended by a car while at a bus stop along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1”. She added that none of the passengers or the bus captain required conveyance to the hospital.

“We are saddened by the passing of the car driver. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to them. We also wish the car passenger a smooth and speedy recovery,” the spokesperson said, as quoted by the publication.

The authorities have not disclosed what may have led to the collision. Police investigations are still ongoing as officers work to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
