Sports trainer at elite California prep school accused of filming heinous assault on 16-year-old female student

A sports trainer at an elite private high school in San Jose has been accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old female student he was treating and filming the alleged assault, police said.

Kelvin Chiu, 31, who works at Archbishop Mitty High School, was arrested after student reported the alleged abuse to San Jose police.

Investigators say a search of his phone turned up child sexual abuse material, raising further concerns as detectives examine whether anyone else may have been victimized.

Chiu worked on the athletic training staff at Archbishop Mitty, identified through its address in police records. The private Catholic school, where tuition runs $34,000 per year, is recognized for its strong academics and sports programs.

Authorities have not named the school in their investigation, but the campus is located in the 5000 block of Mitty Way, where officers responded at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 8.

The teenager told officers that Chiu had been treating her for a sports injury when the alleged sexual assault occurred. She also claimed that he recorded it on his phone.

Detectives with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force secured warrants for Chiu, his home and his vehicles. On Oct. 9, they tracked him to his Fremont residence and searched the property, police said.

Authorities subsequently arrested Chiu and booked him into Santa Clara County Jail. The allegations against him include annoying or molesting a minor, production and possession of child sexual abuse material, and sexual battery.

Investigators have not found any additional victims, but police said Chiu’s position of trust has prompted concern that other students could have been affected.

The Catholic Diocese of San Jose confirmed Chiu’s employment at Archbishop Mitty through Cynthia Shaw, who said the student’s family contacted school officials the night of the alleged incident.

Chiu has since been placed on administrative leave, and the school is cooperating with law enforcement.

Shaw said counseling would be available for students needing assistance as the school responds to the case.

“Our first concern is for the student and family, and for all of our students and families. We recognize the impact a situation of this nature may have on our students, and the school’s Counseling teams will be available to speak with students who may need additional support,” Shaw told CBS News Bay Area.
