‘Spring Awakening’ Revival’s Broadway Run Extended Into Spring

The Spring Awakening off Broadway will continue into the spring.

Citing “unprecedented demand,” the musical revival’s producers said Friday that the show from Steven Sater and the late Duncan Sheik is extending its run at Studio Seaview through Sunday, April 4. It had been set to wrap on Valentine’s Day at the venue.

Previews start November 27 ahead of opening night on December 17.

“The response to Danya Taymor’s production of Spring Awakening has been incredible.” Seaview CEO said. “It is a testament to the enduring power of Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s seminal work and the way this musical continues to resonate with audiences. We are thrilled by the unprecedented demand for this production and could not be more pleased to extend its life with this incredible cast and company.”

Adapted from Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play, Spring Awakening follows a group of German adolescents in the late 19th century as they explore their own sexuality against the backdrop of a deeply repressive world. Michael Mayer’s original Broadway production with stars-in-waiting Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele and John Gallagher Jr, ran from 2006-09 at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre and won a leading eight Tony Awards including Best Musical.

Songwriter Sheik, who died September 17 at 56, scored a pair of Tonys — Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations — for his contemporary rock score. He also was known for the hit single “Barely Breathing,” which spent a remarkable 55 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1996-97.

Spring Awakening was revived in 2015 in a Deaf West Theatre production directed by Michael Arden.
