Survival & Solitude In The North Atlantic: Submarine Boards Rockall Documentary ‘The Edge of Existence’
EXCLUSIVE: Submarine has boarded The Edge of Existence, a film about one man’s attempt to survive for 60 days on Rockall, which is described as the UK’s most remote and dangerous island.
The feature documentary hails from Slick Films, the indie label that won an Oscar for its short The Silent Child. Dan and Josh Braun’s sales, production and distribution outfit Submarine has taken international sales on the film and will also oversee the festival strategy for the project.
The Edge of Existence is Aaron Wheeler’s directorial debut, and he also produces alongside Natasha Hawthornwaite. The film follows electronics lecturer and father Cam Cameron as he attempts to survive sixty days on Rockall, a granite islet situated 230 miles west of Outer Hebrides in Scotland. Although a desolate and uninhabited location in the Atlantic Ocean, it is hugely well-known in the UK, not least as it features in the iconic daily Shipping Forecast, which dates back over a century and is now broadcast by BBC Radio on behalf of the UK’s Coastguard Agency.
The previous record for staying there was 45 days and only a handful of people have even spent one night on the islet, which is over 10 hours from land by boat. Cameron’s effort is a test of endurance in the face of brutal conditions and isolation. The film also shows how his adventure becomes a personal reckoning and a journey to reconnect with his family after years of loss.
“Shot amidst the staggering beauty and danger of the North Atlantic, the film explores the true meaning of adventure and the sacrifices made in the pursuit of legacy – keeping audiences on the edge of their seats,” the team behind the doc said.
Before embarking on the challenge, Cameron spoke to the BBC about his effort to spend 60 days on Rockall: “It’s done by so few people… 4,000 people have been to Everest, only five people have ever stayed for any length of time on Rockall,” he said.
Releasing in 2026, The Edge of Existence is expected to have a strong festival run. Its world premiere will be on November 21 at the Kendal Mountain Film Festival. Chris Overton, Ash Horne, and Daz Black exec produce the film.
