Suspension likely coming for Steelers’ DK Metcalf after punching Lions fan

If the Pittsburgh Steelers have any hope of sneaking into the playoffs, they’re going to need star wide receiver DK Metcalf on the field.

There’s a chance they may be without him for at least one game (possibly longer) after what he did during Sunday’s Week 16 matchup against the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

Late in the second quarter, a video emerged showing Metcalf exchanging words with a Lions fan on the sidelines before punching him in the face as he walked off.

CBS Sports sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson stated during the broadcast that Metcalf initially went over to the fan because he was holding up a No. 4 Steelers jersey (Metcalf’s number), but once he got over to the sideline, the fan reportedly said something that didn’t sit right with Metcalf.

CBS Sports rule analyst and former NFL official Gene Steratore explained why Metcalf wasn’t flagged during the game but did confirm he will be punished by the league after it reviews the incident.

“Because the officials did not see this, and I wouldn’t expect them too, it’s not something that they can weigh into from an officiating standpoint,” Steratore stated. “I have been notified that will be delivered to compliance with the NFL and they will address it at that point.”

NFL rules state any player who strikes a fan is subject to fine, suspension, and even termination of their contract. Metcalf will almost certainly be fined and possibly suspended multiple games.

“We will see what happens — a suspension we all agree is probably coming, which comes at a tough time,” CBS Sports analyst and former MVP quarterback Matt Ryan said during the halftime show.
