Stephanie Atwood

Stephanie Atwood’s journey to becoming a transformative leader is anything but conventional. With an educational background rooted in prestigious institutions, she has harnessed her diverse experiences to challenge traditional norms in leadership and entrepreneurship. As the founder of ElevateHer, a groundbreaking organization established in 2018, Atwood’s vision and dedication have been shaped by personal adversities and an unyielding commitment to fostering change.

A Unique Path to Leadership

Atwood’s unconventional educational journey has significantly influenced her approach to leadership and business. Her studies at some of the world’s most renowned institutions provided her with more than just theoretical knowledge—they gave her a fresh perspective on adaptability, resilience, and innovation.

By blending academic rigor with her lived experiences, she has cultivated a leadership style that is both empathetic and strategic. “I know what people need because I know what I needed but wasn’t there,” she reflects. This survivor-led philosophy has become the cornerstone of her work, ensuring that ElevateHer remains deeply connected to the communities it serves.

Empathy as a Guiding Force

Empathy has been a driving force behind Atwood’s leadership. Her personal understanding of systemic gaps and societal challenges has inspired ElevateHer’s mission to empower women and marginalized groups. She believes in survivor-led processes, emphasizing the importance of listening to those directly affected by societal inequities.

However, maintaining ElevateHer’s vision has required navigating significant challenges. “It’s hard to have a mission that has to change to suit government focuses or project funding just to operate,” Atwood notes. Yet, her unwavering focus on meeting real needs rather than chasing metrics has kept the organization grounded.

ElevateHer’s Evolution Amid Challenges

Since its inception, ElevateHer has faced numerous obstacles, including ageism, sexism, and resistance from rural communities hesitant to embrace new ideas. Funding has also been a persistent challenge, with resources often directed toward established organizations rather than innovative startups like ElevateHer.

“Proving there is a need doesn’t always mean we get funded,” Atwood explains. “The system requires us to compete for project funding, which means no admin funding, no benefits, and often burnout for the staff trying to support those living in poverty while they themselves are underpaid.” Despite these struggles, ElevateHer has reached significant milestones, earning recognition for its impactful work even as it fights for the resources to sustain its mission.

Adapting to the Virtual Landscape

The post-pandemic world has brought a shift in how organizations operate, and ElevateHer has embraced this change. The transition to a virtual landscape has allowed the organization to expand its reach while reducing overhead costs. By utilizing shared spaces and partnering with existing organizations, ElevateHer has been able to “meet people where they are,” ensuring that its services remain accessible to those who need them most.

The Importance of Boundaries in Leadership

As a leader deeply invested in her work, Atwood understands the importance of setting boundaries. She emphasizes the need for authenticity combined with directness and honesty. “In this field, boundaries are constantly tested,” she shares. “But they are essential for maintaining respect and fostering growth within the organization.”

Atwood encourages aspiring leaders to prioritize continuous self-improvement, recommending regular self-assessments and ongoing education. “Investing in yourself is just as important as investing in your team,” she advises. Boundaries, she adds, are not only a form of self-respect but also a way to model healthy relationships and sustainability in leadership.

A Vision for the Future

Stephanie Atwood’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience, empathy, and innovation. Through ElevateHer, she has demonstrated that impactful leadership goes beyond metrics and funding—it is about staying true to one’s mission, building authentic relationships, and creating lasting change. Despite the challenges, Atwood’s commitment to empowering others remains steadfast, proving that even in the face of adversity, vision and perseverance can elevate communities and transform lives.
