Trump Again Rejects Pacing AI Development, Claims It Will Be “Bigger Than The Industrial Revolution’
President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that his administration won’t seek to pace the development of AI, which is already reaching a state that he called “super intelligence.”
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Trump said he’s “not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the industrial revolution.”
“Many say it will be bigger, or than the internet itself. We’ll be very careful. We already have the DOJ and other law enforcement bodies that will rein things in if we have to. We’ll only encourage super intelligence,” Trump added, in reference to his decision to create an “AI Force” that will include the appointment of an “AI Czar.”
In the lengthy social media post this weekend, Trump framed concerns about AI development as partisan politics.
“Over the years, there have been many Hoaxes, all generated by the Radical Left Dumocrats, for purposes of destroying our Country. RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, UKRAINE, Global Warming, Impeachment Hoax #1, Impeachment Hoax #2, Men in Women’s Sports, Transgender for Everyone, and now, the decimation, or destruction, of AI,” Trump wrote.
“We will not in any way hinder or stifle the Growth of this incredible Industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows! However, we will also be looking for BAD, and we can do that, very easily, with our already existing Criminal and Civil Justice System. For this purpose, I am forming the AI Force, much like I did Space Force, which has been a tremendous SUCCESS, in my First Term,” he added.
Trump has repeatedly rejected pacing the development of frontier models, saying the U.S. has to maintain its edge over other countries, particularly China.
It is unclear what the task force will focus on. Top AI executives have been discussing among themselves the need for companies to work together to minimize chances of the technology going rogue.
The Trump administration has not taken steps toward regulating AI. On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said AI companies “need to take responsibility for themselves.”
Speaking on CNBC, Bessent said that “it is humans who are responsible, not the AI” and the Trump administration won’t give them a “liability shield.”
Elsewhere in the address, Trump suggested that Iran is waiting until after the midterm elections before negotiating an end to the war.
“Will a deal be made with Iran that lets them rebuild and create a far greater country than it ever was before, maybe one of the greatest in the Middle East or even the world? Or do I annihilate the Islamic Republic and do it quickly, never giving them a chance to kill and destroy people and countries again?” he wondered. He went on to predict that a deal will be made “right after the election.”
