Who Are Patrick and Thomasina Tobin? Their Spain Hot Tub Death Explained

A London father and his wife are believed to have died after becoming trapped by a hot tub’s suction system at their holiday villa in Spain, with their two teenage children later finding their bodies in a discovery that has shocked the family.

Patrick Tobin, 48, and his wife Thomasina Tobin, 51, were found dead at the Villa Luna property in the Colina del Sol complex in Cullera, near Valencia, on Tuesday, August 25.

Their children, aged 14 and 16, raised the alarm after finding their parents at about 5 p.m., according to reports citing Spanish authorities.

The investigation is focused on suspected suction entrapment, a potentially dangerous situation in which a powerful suction outlet can pull and hold a person underwater.

Investigators believe Patrick may have become trapped first and Thomasina may have tried to help him.

Incident at the Spanish Villa

The family had arrived at the villa on Aug. 22 for a two-week holiday.

Investigators believe the couple died late Monday, Aug. 24, or in the early hours of Tuesday, before their children discovered them later that afternoon.

The teenagers reportedly searched the large property after they could not locate or get a response from their parents.

They eventually found the couple near the hot tub and alerted the property’s owner, who contacted police.

The bodies had been undiscovered for more than 12 hours, according to according to reporting from the Roscommon Herald and BreakingNews.ie.

Investigators examining the deaths found suction-related marks that were reportedly more pronounced on Patrick.

Thomasina had cuts and scratches that investigators believe could be consistent with an attempt to free her husband.

Spanish authorities have ruled out foul play as the leading explanation, while the investigation has increasingly centered on the possibility of a technical malfunction involving the spa’s suction system.

Investigators Establishing Exact Cause

Initial reports suggested several possible explanations, including electrocution and a medical emergency.

Subsequent reporting has said electrocution was ruled out and that the emerging theory involves the intense physical effort and panic associated with the suspected suction entrapment.

Some reports citing preliminary autopsy findings have said the couple may have suffered acute cardiopulmonary arrest during the incident.

Spanish authorities have not publicly released a final official cause of death, and further forensic work remains part of the investigation.

Civil Guard spokesman Pablo Cea previously cautioned against drawing premature conclusions, telling The Irish Times, “Many of the hypotheses are subject to what comes out of the autopsies.”

The hot tub’s water and equipment have also been examined, with the latest reporting indicating that specialists are assessing whether a malfunction could have caused the suspected suction problem.

The Couple and Children

Relatives subsequently traveled to Spain to care for the teenagers, while Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is providing consular assistance in connection with Thomasina’s death.

Thomasina, originally from County Monaghan, Ireland, had built a career in London as a quantity surveyor and was working as a senior executive at Turner & Townsend Alinea.

A spokesperson for Turner & Townsend Alinea, where Thomasina worked as a senior executive, told The Sunday Times that the company was “deeply saddened” by her death and that it was liaising with her family to provide support.

Patrick was originally from New Zealand and had been living in the UK with his family.

There is raised attention around the rarely discussed danger of hot tub suction entrapment, although investigators have not publicly established how the equipment at the Spanish villa malfunctioned.

The case remains under investigation.
