Who is Chad Eberle? Texas police officer accused of Mexico triple homicide
Chad Eberle, a reserve Texas law enforcement officer and Army veteran, has been arrested in Mexico, accused of killing three people and seriously injuring his former partner during a shooting in Saltillo.
The 35-year-old was picked up at a border crossing as he allegedly attempted to leave Mexico with his 3-year-old son, according to Mexican media.
What Is Eberle Accused Of?
The shooting happened at a home in Saltillo, the capital of the Mexican state of Coahuila, during an apparent dispute involving Eberle’s son.
Eberle went to the residence to take custody of the child before an argument broke out, according to Mexican media. He allegedly opened fire, killing three people and critically injuring the child’s mother.
The victims are identified in La Razon de Mexico newspaper as Ana Laura de León Morín, 44; Laura Jaquelín Morín de León, 22; and Emanuel Montero Gómez, 44.
Eberle’s former partner, the 26-year-old mother of his son, was also shot and seriously wounded.
A warrant was issued for the arrest of Eberle, identified by officials only as Chad N, for crimes of femicide and aggravated homicide. Coahuila Attorney General’s Office referenced the warrant in a social media post before Eberle’s arrest.
Following the shooting, Eberle allegedly fled in a gray Chevrolet Silverado with his son.
Newsweek contacted the Coahuila Attorney General’s office via social media, and the U.S. Consulate in Mexico via email Saturday for comment.
How Was He Arrested?
Authorities tracked Eberle as he headed toward the U.S.-Mexico border. A social media post shows him in custody.
He was arrested at International Bridge II in Piedras Negras, Mexico, which connects the Mexican city with Eagle Pass, Texas. Authorities took him into custody on the night of August 4, before he could cross into the United States.
Eberle was subsequently transferred to the Saltillo Men’s Penitentiary, at 9:59 p.m. on Wednesday, where he remains in custody as the criminal case proceeds.
The boy was placed under the protection of PRONNIF, Mexico’s child protection agency.
Coahuila Attorney General Federico Fernández said Chad N was placed at the disposal of judicial authorities after the arrest warrant was executed. Mexican authorities have also maintained communication with the U.S. Consulate.
Who Is Chad Eberle?
Eberle has spent much of the past decade working in Texas law enforcement.
He received his Texas peace officer license in January 2017 and subsequently obtained basic, intermediate and advanced certifications, according to Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) records which also list military service in Eberle’s training records, as reported by KTXS.
Eberle’s law enforcement employment history has included several departments across Texas, including the Northside Independent School District Police Department, Bexar County Constable’s Office Precinct 2, Gregory Police Department, Lockney Police Department, Bangs Police Department and Santa Anna Police Department.
He worked for Northside ISD from August 2017 to January 2019 before joining the Bexar County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office, where he served as a deputy constable for approximately a year.
Newsweek contacted the Bexar County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office via email on Saturday for comment.
Eberle was hired by the Santa Anna Police Department in November 2025 and was serving as an unpaid reserve officer, typically working one weekend a month, according to Police Chief Ryan Tucker. He was on personal leave at the time of the alleged killings, as reported by San Antonio Express News.
Coleman Today posted a statement from the City of Santa Anna which said: “The City of Santa Anna has been made aware of a situation out of Mexico concerning one of our Reserve Officers, Chad Eberle, that was on a personal leave of absence until December. The Santa Anna Police Department has been in contact with the US Consulate in Mexico and TCOLE in Texas. He was an unpaid Reserve Police Officer hired in November 2025 and worked 1 weekend per month. Due to the ongoing investigation, no other public comment will be made.”
What Happens Next?
Eberle remains in Mexican custody as authorities investigate the killings and pursue the case against him.
