Who Is Colin Kazim-Richards? Former Premier League Striker Sacked by Crawley Town After Dismal Start

Colin Kazim-Richards, a former Premier League striker who represented Turkey internationally during an 18-year playing career, has been sacked as Crawley Town head coach after a disappointing start to the 2026-27 League Two season. The club announced his departure on Wednesday, Oct. 21, following a 3-2 home defeat to Shrewsbury Town that left the team at the bottom of the fourth-tier standings.

Kazim-Richards’ dismissal marks the end of his first managerial appointment, less than a year after he helped Crawley avoid relegation. Assistant head coach Julian Gray has also left the club, while director of football Erdem Konyar will depart as Crawley seeks to address its early-season struggles.

Colin Kazim-Richards’ Football Career Across Europe

Born in London, Kazim-Richards built a reputation as a forward through spells at several English clubs before establishing an extensive career across European and international football. He played for teams including Brighton and Hove Albion, Sheffield United and Derby County, while also featuring for clubs such as Celtic, Fenerbahce, Galatasaray, Olympiacos, Feyenoord and Corinthians.

His career took him through multiple leagues and footballing cultures, giving him experience of different playing styles, dressing rooms and competitive environments. He also represented Turkey after making his international debut in 2007, eventually earning 37 caps and scoring twice.

Kazim-Richards became known for his physical presence and versatility in attack. His journey across clubs in England and abroad gave him exposure to different approaches to training, team management and competition. Before taking charge at Crawley, he had also been involved in Arsenal’s youth setup.

He retired from professional football in 2023 following a spell with Turkish club Fatih Karagumruk. His transition from player to coach began with youth development work, before Crawley offered him the opportunity to take charge of a senior side.

First Managerial Opportunity at Crawley Town

Crawley appointed Kazim-Richards in March 2026 after parting company with Scott Lindsey, whose team had endured a 10-match winless run in League Two. The club was then close to the relegation zone, leaving the incoming coach with the immediate challenge of preserving its English Football League status.

Despite having no previous senior managerial appointment, Kazim-Richards approached the job with confidence, drawing on his experience of playing in relegation battles. He had spoken openly about the importance of understanding the pressure faced by players fighting to remain in the division.

His initial spell produced the desired result. Crawley collected nine points from seven matches under his leadership, including two victories and three draws. A goalless draw against Salford City on the final day of the season secured their survival.

The achievement led Crawley to offer him a new contract in May. Kazim-Richards said he wanted to establish a stronger team culture and build on the foundations created during the final weeks of the campaign. The club’s decision reflected confidence that his experience and leadership could guide the team into a more stable period.

Poor Results and Questions Over Squad Experience

Crawley’s fortunes deteriorated during the opening weeks of the new season. The club made extensive changes to its playing personnel over the summer, with 16 players arriving permanently or on loan and another 16 departing.

The turnover created a challenge for Kazim-Richards as he attempted to establish consistency. According to BBC Sport, he handed out nine league debuts, while Crawley conceded 20 goals in their first 10 league matches.

The team managed only one league victory in that period and suffered seven defeats. Its latest setback came against Shrewsbury, with Crawley losing 3-2 at home on Tuesday night. The result left the club bottom of League Two and increased pressure for an immediate change.

Before his dismissal, Kazim-Richards said he believed he could improve the team’s performances but acknowledged concerns about its lack of experience and game management. He told BBC Radio Surrey: “I feel I can. If I’m given the time is another question.”

Crawley Town Moves On After Another Coaching Change

Crawley announced the departures shortly after midnight following the Shrewsbury defeat. The club thanked Kazim-Richards and Gray for helping preserve its EFL status the previous season and acknowledged Konyar’s work since returning to the club.

The departure of the director of football alongside the coaching staff also puts attention on recruitment and the club’s broader sporting decisions. Crawley’s next appointment will inherit a team needing points, defensive improvement and greater consistency.

For Kazim-Richards, the dismissal ends a managerial spell that began with successful survival efforts but could not sustain that momentum into the new campaign. His playing career brought extensive experience across countries and competitions; his first senior coaching role has now exposed the challenges of translating that experience into sustained results from the dugout.
