Katseye vocalist Sophia Laforteza revealed on Friday that she will temporarily step away from the popular girl group over mental health concerns. Her exit from the group comes less than six months after fellow bandmate Manon Bannerman announced her hiatus.
Laforteza “will be temporarily unable to participate in upcoming promotional activities”, HYBE x Geffen Records said in a statement.
“We understand how much EYEKONS were looking forward to seeing Sophia on stage, but it is imperative that her mental health and wellness are prioritised,” the label said of the Filipino-American superstar.
Sophia Laforteza has become one of the more recognizable names to emerge from the recent wave of internationally formed pop groups, stepping into her role as leader of KATSEYE after a public, competition-based path to get there. Born Sophia Elizabeth Guevara Laforteza on Dec. 31, 2002, she holds both Filipino and American citizenship, a duality that’s become central to how she’s presented her identity throughout her career.

Laforteza was born in Queens, New York, but was raised primarily in Manila, Philippines. She trained for nearly two years before advancing to “The Debut: Dream Academy,” a survival competition series that selected 20 finalists from more than 120,000 applicants to compete for spots in a new globally formed girl group.
She was the only Filipina contestant on the show, competing alongside hopefuls from countries including South Korea, Australia, Belarus and Argentina. Her audition song was “Part of Your World” from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” She ultimately earned a spot in the final lineup, and KATSEYE officially debuted on June 28, 2024, with Laforteza named the group’s leader.
