Who Was Shalini Thakur? Glamorous Woman Killed by Illegal Migrant DoorDash Worker After Biden Administration Allowed Him to Stay in Country
A California woman was fatally shot by a 22-year-old DoorDash driver who had allegedly stalked her for months after illegally entering the U.S. in 2023. Shalini Thakur, 38, was killed outside a Panera Bread in Sacramento on September 8, with witnesses looking on in horror.
The suspect, Rohit Rohit, an Indian national who had entered the U.S. illegally and was released under the Biden administration, fled the scene in a vehicle before later shooting himself dead. Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Amar Gandhi said the incident occurred shortly before 3 p.m., when Rohit approached Thakur outside her workplace at a shopping center on Howe Avenue and “began to accost her.”

“As the victim attempted to run away, Rohit chased her down, pulled out a firearm, and shot her multiple times,” he said. “The victim fell to the ground.” Gandhi said Rohit then approached Thakur as she lay wounded on the sidewalk and “shot her in the head at close range.”
Deputies arrived shortly afterward and began tracking Rohit’s vehicle as he drove away from the scene. They soon found the vehicle and said Rohit “immediately slammed on his brakes.”
“Deputies attempted to call out the driver for some time, but ultimately discovered that he was deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Lieutenant Gandhi said.
Homicide detectives later determined that Rohit had allegedly been harassing and stalking Thakur after meeting her through his DoorDash deliveries to her workplace.
The alleged pattern of harassment reportedly began at least as early as January, when Thakur found an Apple AirTag hidden beneath the hood of her car. Gandhi said Rohit’s conduct became “increasingly alarming.” On one occasion, he allegedly let the air out of Thakur’s tires before following her to work and offering to help.
Rohit also allegedly obtained a key to her apartment and entered her home on Sierra Boulevard while she was asleep. The following day, he reportedly claimed he had entered the apartment to check on her after she failed to respond to his messages.
The incidents eventually led Thakur to seek a restraining order against Rohit. Authorities said he violated the order in July by leaving assorted grocery items outside her front door.
Family Devastated

The investigation into Thakur’s death remains ongoing. Thakur’s mother, Kumari, said the loss was especially devastating because her husband had died two years earlier, leaving Thakur as her only child.
“I am alone in this world,” Kumari told KCRA 3. Kumari said she had spoken with her daughter over phone less than an hour before the shooting. They had planned to talk again about 15 minutes later.
“Then she will never come,” Kumari said through tears. “I call her every time, every minute, every hour. I don’t know.”
When Thakur did not answer her calls, Kumari said she sent several WhatsApp messages asking her daughter to call back. One of the messages read: “I am worried about you.” The grieving mother also accused authorities of failing to protect her daughter, saying she had sought “restraining order after restraining order” before Thakur was killed.
The Department of Homeland Security also criticized the Biden administration’s immigration policies in connection with the case. DHS said Rohit entered the U.S. illegally through Arizona in August 2023.
Rohit was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents but was later “released into the country by the Biden administration,” according to DHS.
A DHS spokesperson strongly criticized the Biden administration’s immigration policies following Thakur’s killing. “This illegal alien from India harassed, stalked, and then killed a 38-year-old woman in California, and then took his own life when police caught up to him,” the spokesperson said.
“This tragedy would have been completely avoided if it weren’t for the Biden Administration RELEASING this killer into our country.
“Sanctuary politicians must put an end to reckless policies that play Russian roulette with American lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her family.”
Rohit was able to clear background checks conducted by Checkr to work for DoorDash after providing a Social Security number, sources told the Daily Mail.
However, he reportedly had not completed a delivery in more than six weeks and was not active on the platform when Thakur was killed.
