Why Did Ed Harris Want To Leave Dutton Ranch? Actor Says Role Was Much Smaller Than Promised

Ed Harris has revealed that the role he signed up for in Dutton Ranch was not the one he ultimately found himself playing.

Speaking to Variety’s Marc Malkin at the Monday premiere of Apple TV+’s The Dink, the veteran actor said he was led to believe his character, veterinarian Everett McKinney, would be one of the series’ four central figures. According to Harris, that expectation changed once production got underway, leaving him feeling his role was far less significant than he had anticipated.

Actor Considered Leaving During Season One

Harris said his frustration grew as filming progressed, eventually reaching the point where he told his representatives he wanted to leave the project.

He also raised his concerns directly with the show’s producers, saying he felt his character was underused and had little impact on the overall story. Harris described the response he received as largely noncommittal, leaving him uncertain whether any changes would be made.

Perspective Changed After Watching the Series

Despite his frustrations during production, Harris said his opinion shifted after watching the completed first season.

He explained that Everett ultimately appeared more important to the story than he had expected while filming, adding that he believed the finished product turned out well overall. Harris is already under contract for a second season and said he has since been told his character will play a much larger role going forward.

Deleted Scene Still Stands Out

Among the moments Harris wishes had remained in the series is a deleted bar scene in which his character sang.

According to the actor, producers told him the sequence was removed because its upbeat tone conflicted with the emotional ending of the episode.

Season Two Already in the Works

Dutton Ranch, which follows Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler after the events of Yellowstone, recently concluded its nine-episode first season on Paramount+ and has already been renewed for a second installment. Production on the new season is expected to begin next February.

Representatives for Paramount, series creator Taylor Sheridan and 101 Studios had not responded to Variety’s request for comment at the time of publication. Harris also did not specifically name Sheridan while discussing his frustrations with the production.
