Why Did Google CEO Sundar Pichai Tell Trump He Couldn’t Rename the Atlantic Ocean?
U.S. President Donald Trump recently revealed that he had earlier made a proposal to Google to rename the Atlantic Ocean. He had pitched the idea to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, but it was turned down.
During the rally in South Carolina, President Donald Trump said he proposed renaming the Atlantic Ocean “Trump Ocean.” He also reminisced about sharing the idea with Pitcha, whom he described as a “brilliant guy.”
However, Pichai instantly refused the idea. He said that oceans are a totally different type of water body than lakes, which he had previously gotten renamed.
The Google CEO said, “No, no, no. This time I’m not doing it. Oceans are different, sir. They cover a lot of countries. Please don’t ask us to do that.” Geographically, an ocean represents more than one country, which would create tensions if one country tries to name it after itself, or its President.
After Pichai refused to rename the Atlantic Ocean, Trump shifted to the possibility of renaming the Pacific Ocean as the American Ocean. “Let’s leave the Atlantic Ocean. But the Pacific Ocean—we’ll call it the American Ocean. How do you think Europe will react to this? Do you think they’ll like it?” said Trump with a hint of irony and sarcasm.
Previous Changes Made By Trump
The President’s comments come after he renamed two local water bodies on Google Maps, including the Gulf of Mexico, which he renamed the Gulf of America for American users. This happened under Trump’s executive orders shortly after he took office in 2025. He also changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America (a localised change) on 26 August 2026 amid the escalating trade war with Canada.
On 2 September 2026, in a post on Truth Social, he called the Strait of Hormuz the Trump Strait, claiming that the United States had achieved military and financial control over the area amid the ongoing U.S.-Israel war against Iran. Months earlier, he jokingly called the waterway the “Strait of Trump” before correcting himself.
During a rally earlier this month in Tennessee, Trump said, “Before I get out, I think we should have an ocean. We call it ‘Trump Ocean’ or ‘Ocean of the Americas,’ something like that.”
