A medical expert who also testified in a separate high-profile Massachusetts case explained that Clancy’s temperature loss stemmed from lying on frozen ground, which caused her body to lose the ability to regulate its own temperature, dilating blood vessels and releasing heat to the atmosphere. That expert also confirmed Clancy suffered a burst fracture of the spine, consistent with a high-impact fall, which left her paralyzed from the waist down.

Court testimony and outside medical expert says

Outside medical commentary has echoed that explanation. One surgeon consulted on the case noted that a temperature of 82.1°F places a person solidly in the severe hypothermia range, and that reaching it does not require unusual circumstances when someone is lying injured on frozen ground on a January night in Massachusetts. A spinal cord injury near the mid-back can also cause a condition in which the body loses independent temperature regulation below the injury site, causing core temperature to drift toward the surrounding environment. Combined with blood loss requiring transfusions and a subsequent cardiac arrest that required chest compressions, doctors say the drop to 82.1°F is explainable through standard trauma physiology rather than any inconsistency in the case timeline.

The body-temperature figure has fueled public debate and online speculation about the timeline of events on the night the children died, with some questioning whether the drop happened too quickly to be plausible. Medical testimony presented at trial has directly addressed those questions, tying the reading to documented injuries: spinal fracture, blood loss, shock, and prolonged exposure to near-freezing temperatures.

The trial is centered on whether Clancy was criminally responsible for her children’s deaths or was legally insane at the time due to postpartum psychosis, a claim her defense has raised.
