Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s move back to the United Kingdom has reignited scrutiny of the long-simmering tension inside the Royal Family, and a new report suggests the mood at the top of that family is far from unified.
According to Us Weekly, a source close to the situation claimed Prince William was less hopeful than his father, King Charles III, that the couple’s return would go smoothly. The source described an atmosphere of “cautious optimism” around whether Harry and Meghan would settle back into British life without stirring up further conflict, but said William doubted that would actually happen.
None of this has been confirmed by Prince William himself, nor by Kensington Palace or Buckingham Palace.
Still, the timing is notable: it lands just days after Charles moved to formally clarify where the Sussexes now stand within the institution. That clarification came on Sept. 7, when the king authorized the release of a letter to senior government and military officials confirming that Harry and Meghan remain non-working members of the Royal Family.
Reuters reported the letter stated there had been no change to that status since the couple stepped back from official duties in 2020. In other words, physical proximity has not translated into any shift in their formal role.
Why William May Be Wary of the Return
The strain between the two brothers has been building for years, and Harry’s relocation puts them geographically closer than they’ve been in nearly six years. Us Weekly’s source claimed William has not spoken to Harry and remains frustrated by both the circumstances of the Sussexes’ 2020 exit and everything that followed.
The public rupture between the brothers traces back to January 2020, when Harry and Meghan announced they would step down as senior working royals. They relocated to California shortly after and began building an independent life, including a series of commercial ventures unrelated to royal duties.
Harry later went public with detailed accounts of his relationship with his family, first in a string of high-profile interviews and then in his 2023 memoir, “Spare.” He and Meghan also aired grievances about their time inside the family in a Netflix documentary series.
Those disclosures didn’t just strain Harry’s relationship with the institution broadly; they deepened the specific rift with William, and that history hasn’t gone away simply because the family now lives closer together.
What Actually Brought Them Back
Harry and Meghan confirmed in August that they were relocating to Britain, with their children set to begin school there. Security had long been a sticking point in any potential return. Harry’s legal battle over police protection has been one of the central issues shaping his relationship with the UK since he left royal duties, so settling back in the country wasn’t a decision made lightly.
The move also doesn’t mean a clean break from their American life: reports indicate the couple is keeping their California home while establishing a base in Britain, effectively splitting their footprint across two countries rather than choosing one.
Harry has already picked back up a handful of public and charitable commitments on UK soil, including upcoming appearances tied to the Invictus community and WellChild causes he’s continued supporting independently since stepping away from royal duties in 2020.
