Zoë Kravitz Found the Easiest Way to Make a Basic White T-shirt Much Less Boring

With late-summer style fatigue hitting harder than ever, Zoë Kravitz is teaching a master class in dressing when you barely want to wear any clothes at all.

For the past few days in New York City—where her partner, Harry Styles, is kicking off a monthlong residency—Kravitz been serving looks that rely on a styling trick I like to call the one-little-thing theory. Unlike the well-documented seven-point rule, which relies on a sartorial point system to craft a look that’s interesting enough to capture attention, this fashion trick requires no math, just a collection of zesty basics.

As we’ve told you before, a zesty basic is “a piece simple enough that it can still be considered a staple but is subverted slightly beyond what’s expected.” If you wear just one of them, you can make event the most basic outfit feel personal. Still can’t picture it? Well, Zoë Kravitz seems to always prove the theory any time she steps out of the house.

Most recently Kravitz stepped out a combination of pieces you absolutely have in your wardrobe. The foundation of her look was a pair of black biker shorts and a simple graphic white T-shirt, which she complimented with basic black slides, oval sunglasses, and a white knit headband by Costa Knit Atelier.

In chic-girl terms, the combo is a little Princess Diana meets Caroline Bessette-Kennedy, but without much flavor. What makes it 100% Zoe is the little cheetah-print bag she threw on top. With just one item, Kravitz added an eye-catching detail that didn’t make the look feel any less effortless. The same would be true with a leopard- or zebra-print moment.
