Carson Wentz pockets six-figure bonus after Vikings’ win over the Packers

The Minnesota Vikings turned to backup quarterback Carson Wentz with about six minutes remaining in the first quarter after Kyler Murray was injured (concussion) on a scramble via a hit by Green Bay Packers defender Javon Bullard.

Wentz helped lead the Vikings to a comeback victory over the Packers, Minnesota’s NFC North rival. Green Bay led the Vikings 22-10 in the third quarter, but Minnesota scored 29 unanswered points to earn a 39-22 victory on Sunday.

Per Spotrac, Wentz earned a bonus for engineering the comeback. He earned $100,000 for playing 60% of the Vikings’ offensive snaps and winning the game.

“The Minnesota Vikings victory over the Green Bay Packers secures QB Carson Wentz a $100,000 bonus,” Spotrac posted on X. “Wentz is eligible for this bonus each time he plays at least 60% of the snaps in game that his team wins (max 6 wins). He can then earn another $150k for each of his next 6 wins.”

Wentz earned the backup job to Murray in training camp, beating out 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy. Wentz went 12 of 19 passing for 133 yards and three touchdowns.

It remains to be seen if Murray will be able to return to play in Minnesota’s Week 2 contest on the road against the Chicago Bears. If he cannot go, Wentz will have another opportunity to earn a bonus.

During his postgame news conference, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell praised Wentz for coming in and leading the team to a victory.

“That’s why he’s here,” coach Kevin O’Connell said, via CBS Sports. “For him to come in and do what he did and just be part of that calming presence that allowed our team to continue playing, I can’t say enough about him.”

Wentz played in five games for the Vikings last season, throwing for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions.
