Kid Rock Reveals What Trump, Bill Maher and Stephen A. Smith Discussed During White House Dinner
President Donald Trump, comedian Bill Maher, musician Kid Rock and ESPN host Stephen A. Smith discussed everything from the war in Iran to Black unemployment during a White House dinner, with Kid Rock revealing details of the politically unlikely gathering on Friday, Oct. 16.
Kid Rock described the meeting as “epic,” saying the four men had laughs while also tackling difficult issues despite their different political affiliations. He said they found common ground on socialism and communism, while Smith raised concerns about Black unemployment and HBCU funding.
The dinner took place Thursday, Oct. 15, and has gained attention after Trump praised his guests the following day, claiming Maher liked him more than people realized. The gathering allowed a direct conversation between the president and the outspoken comedian, who has criticized Trump publicly.
Kid Rock Reveals Key Topics Discussed at White House Dinner
Speaking on Fox & Friends on Friday, Kid Rock described the evening as an opportunity for people with different political views to speak candidly. “It was epic,” he said. “Two Democrats, two Republicans sit down, break bread, have laughs, talk about, have tough conversations on a lot of the issues.”
According to Kid Rock, the discussion covered socialism, communism, the war in Iran and efforts to bring back interpreters and other people who helped the United States in Afghanistan. He also said Smith focused on unemployment among Black women and concerns about corporate support for HBCUs amid the Trump administration’s opposition to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
Kid Rock recounted Smith’s concern that the administration’s approach to DEI could discourage companies from funding historically Black institutions. In response, the musician said he sought to reassure Smith that the administration supported continued corporate donations. “I’ll go out on a limb and say I’m speaking for President Trump and the administration saying, no, no, not only do we support, we want to encourage corporations to continue funding HBCUs and donating to them,” Kid Rock said.
He also added that education was important for strengthening Black families.
What Trump Said About Maher After Their Latest Meeting
Trump also offered his own opinions of the dinner when speaking to reporters on Friday, praising the guests and suggesting the evening had gone well. “Bill Maher, I tell you what, he likes me a lot more than people understand. And I actually like him,” Trump said, describing the gathering as informative.
The president added that the group discussed a wide range of subjects and took a tour of the White House ballroom construction site. The dinner was Maher’s second known White House meal with Trump. Maher and Trump first dined together in March 2025, but Trump later resumed publicly criticizing the comedian.
Maher had discussed plans to meet Trump again on his Club Random podcast before the latest gathering. As of Oct. 17, he had not publicly commented on the second dinner, according to TV Insider.
