Majorca Holiday Tragedy as Brit, 69, Dies After Emergency Crews Rush to Popular Resort
A 69-year-old British holidaymaker has died in Puerto de Pollensa, a popular resort in northern Majorca, after emergency crews attempted to revive him on Friday afternoon. Authorities are investigating the death, with a post-mortem examination expected to help establish whether he drowned or suffered an underlying medical emergency.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16. Paramedics attempted to save the man, but he was pronounced dead despite their efforts.
The Civil Guard in Majorca has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Officials are expected to submit their findings to a local court after the investigation, while the precise cause of death remains unconfirmed.
Autopsy Expected to Establish Cause of Death
The circumstances of the British tourist’s death remain unclear as authorities await the results of a post-mortem examination. Although the incident has been described as a suspected drowning, investigators are also examining whether a medical emergency may have occurred.
A Civil Guard spokesman confirmed the man’s nationality and age on Saturday, saying, “The man who died yesterday in Puerto de Pollensa was a British man aged 69.”
No further details about the man’s identity or the events immediately preceding his death were provided in the available report.
Puerto de Pollensa, also known as Port de Pollença, is a coastal resort in northern Majorca, one of Spain’s Balearic Islands. The area attracts visitors for its waterfront, beaches and holiday accommodation.
Recent Deaths Involve Holidaymakers at Spanish and Portuguese Resorts
The death comes after other incidents involving British and Irish holidaymakers at popular coastal destinations in southern Europe.
On Sept. 29, a British woman died after getting into difficulty in the water at S’Arenal Gros beach in Portinatx, northern Ibiza. Lifeguards began rescue efforts, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with assistance from a British doctor who was nearby.
An off-duty Spanish nurse and a firefighter also reportedly joined the effort before police and paramedics took over. Rescuers spent around an hour attempting to revive the woman, but she was pronounced dead. She had been staying at the nearby Sandos El Greco Hotel.
Two other holidaymakers died in separate incidents along Portugal’s Algarve coast in September.
A 58-year-old British man was pulled from the sea at Pintadinho Beach near Portimão on Sept. 23. Two lifeguards brought him out of the water and began CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Specialist psychologists were called to support his family following the incident.
Three days later, a 64-year-old Irish tourist died after getting into difficulty in the sea at Prainha Beach in Alvor, approximately a 20-minute drive away.
These incidents involved separate locations and circumstances, and authorities have not indicated that they are connected to the death in Majorca.
Previous Fatal Incident Near Puerto de Pollensa
Puerto de Pollensa and the nearby town of Pollença have also been the sites of a fatal swimming-pool accident involving a young British holidaymaker.
A 3-year-old British girl died in June after being found floating face-down in a holiday swimming pool in Pollensa. She was taken to hospital on June 24, and her death was confirmed two days later.
Pollensa is less than four miles from Puerto de Pollensa, where the 69-year-old British man died on Friday.
The latest incident remains under investigation. Authorities are awaiting further medical findings to determine the cause of death, and the circumstances surrounding the man’s final hours have not been established.
